Photographer's Note

TE meeting in Sacavem Medieval Fair with
Filipe (sacavem), Aires (AiresSantos) e Eugénia Francisco.

Aires and Eugénia didn't stay for the night, so this one is specially for them.

The witch the top of the platform was preparing a punch made from Galician aguardiente - a spirit distilled from wine and flavoured with special herbs or coffee, plus sugar, lemon peel, coffee beans and cinnamon that is called "The Queimada".

While preparing the punch the witch recited a spell or incantation, so that special powers are conferred to the queimada and those drinking it. Then the queimada is set alight, and slowly burns as more brandy is added.

When it was ready it was served to the public.
By my side I heard someone whispering that men who drink that, could not conceive anymore!
Still they did it.

On the WS you can see a closer view of the witch (courtesy of Filipe (sacavem) and some fireworks that ended the fair.

In Wikipedia you can read some more about this drink, its history and the lyrics of the song recited by the witch.
