Do you know the movie The Beach with Leonado di Caprio? It is about tourists arriving in Thailand who dream about finding a perfect beach and are able to do a lot to get there.
One day coming back from a fantastic beach near Lagos in Algarve we met a family who shared with us a secret: there are few fantastic beaches which have plenty of those orange rock formations, arches etc and yet the beaches are little known. We should drive to Praia de Alvor and we will find it. Next day in the morning we arrive in Praia de Alvor: but it seems a usual sand beach with thousands of tourists. There can be nothing to the west so we drive to the east. Map indeed confirms that somewhere between Alvor and Portimao should be Praia dos Tres Irmaos, which was mentioned by that guys yesterday. We drove up to Praia da Rocha in Portimao but we skipped the region between because it was not easily accessible and not marked in any way. Nothing –crowds again everywhere. Pissed off we came back to Lagos. But in the evening we meet same family again and they say that we gave up too soon because from those exact beaches we visited, at the very end there are passages to the unknown paradise beaches. Moreover we found few postcards confirming their tips with stunning views of Praia dos Tres Irmaos and Praia de Alvor. On our last day in Portugal we decided to give it one more try. We arrived in Alvor again and using navigation we tried to get slowly to the east keeping as close to the coast as possible. It was not easy, at a certain point area got closed for expensive hotels with restricted access and there was no place to park the car. Finally we found an unpaved road, left our car in the middle of nowhere and headed to the coast. The views were spectacular indeed, similar to those from the postcards. From a high rock we were able to see few guys walking down on a perfect beach. They were naked. We usually don’t pick the nudist beaches but we were so tired of the heat and our search that we decided to go down there. The access was not the easiest. Not everybody was naked so we did not feel that weird. There was however something going on in one end of the beach. It seemed that there is a tiny passage to another beach which naked guys were passing back and forth. I was afraid to see what is going on there but my wife curiosity forced me to investigate it. It was indeed one of the perfect beaches with a few usually naked gay couples. The beach was really photogenic but I did not want to take out my camera to disturb those people peace. On the other hand why can they enjoy the beach and I shouldn’t? There was no sign prohibiting photography. I tried to be as discrete as possible and not point my camera direction naked people, which was not easy. Finally we took couple of nice photos with ourselves but I could not get a nice view of the whole beach because of the nudists. Eventually one of them approached me and saying that this is a gay beach and we are disturbing the atmosphere. I said I am sorry but this is one of the most beautiful beaches and I like taking photographs. That was the first time in my life when I was discriminated due to my heterosexual orientation.
By the way it was not the beach which the family recommended but a neighbouring one. We never reached Tres Irmaos.

ladna fotka...and particular history about it. it's quite incredible...but discrimination always works in 2 ways...and those who are usually discriminated can also be discriminatory.
ok, maybe I am too hard...and they are probably right in guarding a place for their own where they can be free as much as they like...but I think that guy was a bit too hard and there was no need to argue. in the end you just took a couple of shot - wonderful by the way - and then you were expected to go away

Interesting shot, with the balck area which prevent the eye to escape, and the contrasting hues between the sea and sky and the rocks. The umbrella is not welcome in this nature picture.

Fantastic photo, very impressive "gay"(!?) beach, very exotic place, I couldn't expect to see something like this in Portugal! Fantastic natural frame, great composition, perfect light management, brilliant colours! Great note, too, discrimination for being heterosexual, sounds crazy!

Witaj Mariusz, ciekawa historia.

Wow! Perfect framing with the shade of the rocky "window"! The view beyond is so attractive and inviting! Good you went there and took this wonderful picture! That's part of our wish to always take good pictures! Sharpness, exposure, depth of field and colors are excellent! The vertical format and the pov were very well chosen and the composition is quite effective, totally successful and definitely attractive!
TFS - congratulations1

A beautiful beach indeed, well captured with strong contrasts accompanying fine colour shades.

Your effort gives us a wonderful picture of this beach.
The sections of these beaches between the rocks are sometimes a little bit confusing, with the limits not clear between neighboring beaches. I would not be sure if this is precisely Praia dos Três Irmãos ("beach of the three brothers") or Prainha ("little beach"), but I believe what you wrote.
About the "disturbed" people, if they were Portuguese, I guess they would not dare to speak to other Portuguese that way. But for sure they noticed that you are foreign and guessed that it was another "reason" for you "disturbing" them. I'm disgusted with such attitudes, because there are no owners of the Portuguese beaches. According to the law, all beaches in Portugal are public places (like a downtown street); the words of the law are "maritime public domain".
Sometimes the beach resorts try to break the law of the maritime public domain and they try to do restricted access paths or even gates. Like you wrote: "at a certain point area got closed for expensive hotels with restricted access". They make the access seems like a restricted access, but they are not, because that would be illegal. For example, from the main road between Alvor and Praia do Vau there is an access to Prainha and Praia dos Três Irmãos through an expensive hotel and resort. Next time go through it; they make it seems restricted, but it is not. If they try to stop you, just say that you're going to the beach, and if they don't accept, just tell them to call the police. They will not call the police, because they do know that the maritime public domain law is on the side of the general persons. The same applies to the "disturbed" gay people.
To be under these cliffs can be dangerous. Read my note in the photo Dangerous beauty, in neighboring Praia do Vau.

very nice rock formations with the play of the light and the shadow to be perfect.I like the brilliant light that falls on the beach,as the different layers of the scene. Informative your note too.Well done.

Pozdrawiam i do uslyszenia,

Wonderful capture, Mariusz!!
Excellent focused photo and amazing colours!!
Well, abour the gays I have to admit you that basicly I agree with you. Nowadays gays colective really is not tolerant with us. The LGBT community continuously demand more rights for them with very aggressive and noisy events.
In fact, they make so great pressure that you can not say anything that is not consistent with their beliefs.
Actually they claim not for more civil rights but sometimes they express just the requirements for certain privileges.
If the mayority of our societies want to claim our rights, just like they do, we certainly bring to a standstill all our cities.
Well, I am visiting often the places like Sitges or Benidorm and fortuantely I never had problems with them.
But I think some of their claims are exaggerated in form and contents.
With the best regards,
Dyerco (10185) 2009-10-10 2:28
Well composed so that we see through one arch to the others. It looks like you were able to keep these fellows to a minimum in this shot.
Waylim (25502) 2010-01-26 18:25
Very funny Story,Persistence pays off, well at least for this shot, the boys are not very visible, without reading your note, I many not even notice the. I love your POV here, looking through the layers of arches and rock all the way to the ocean. I really like it alot.

Excellent perespective of the mirror-in-front-of-the-mirror type, dividing the picture in harmonious consecutive layers. Great distribution of colors. Congratulations!

A niebieski parasol - palce lizać.
PS Abstrahując od preferencji,bo to akurat żona i córka.

Sorry, but I've just noticed that you referred me to this picture in one of your very kind critiques of one of my pictures from Portugal!
Your note is very interesting and also raises one or two rather uncomfortable points. How dreadful in this present World, when we are all supposed to preach and believe in equality, that you should have felt discriminated against.
But to your picture. We seem to be peering from the mouth of a cave and seeing a glorious view of golden rocks and blue sea and sky - an almost Heavenly spectacle! Your composition is excellent, the light and colours divine and your details and sharpness exquisite!

Thank you for your link to these shot, which I had not seen before, a beautiful beach scene with a variety of depth thanks to where you have shot this from. The arches and rock formations are incredible, this must be some beach.
And on that note, I dont know if its appropriate for me to laugh at the note you have there, but it has raised a smile as I picture you having a verbal interaction with a group of naked men who arent too happy about the camera. Seems discrimination is everywhere now. Great shot and complimentary note.
All the best

Is your name the equivalent of Mario in Spanish? Must be , it seems
Finally I arrived at this note first ( quite funny but in a way ,you taken photos for sure make "them" nervous)
Anyway you manage to compose a very creative one using the rocks as a frame two times
Well done, congrats
A pity your wife had not a camera to film all the scene and put it on YT

Sneaking on beaches to look for the nudist, I hope you did get out safely from there...
Anyway, I can comprehend the POV chosen and by the way could not avoid the blue parasol, and kept a discrete scene with regards to those guys on the beach.
Nice taken from shaded area out to the sunny side.
Have a nice weekend,
