Photographer’s Note

SANTUÁRIO DE NOSSA SENHORA DO CABO ESPICHEL

Cape Espichel stands out on even the Costa Azul for the beauty of its natural surroundings. Its original function was defence but in times of greater peace and security a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of the Cape was built. The church is flanked by a series of royal dependencies that provided and cared for the pilgrims that would head there. Built in 1701, the building is in baroque style and attributed to architect João Antunes.

On the interior, there are pieces of important artistic value including the retable of the main altar in Portuguese baroque containing a statue of Our Lady of the Cape the ceiling, painted in perspective (carried out in 1740 by the painter Lourenço da Cunha) and the 16th century work by the Master of Lourinhã in the sacristy depicting the Saints James and Anthony. Of further note is the throne on the main altar destined for royal visits.

A few meters from Sanctuary, there is the small, 15th century Ermida da Memória (Chapel of Memory), predating the Sanctuary itself. Its interior is covered in 18th century tile panels that depict the legend of the Lady of the Cape. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to an elderly couple in 1410.

Surrounded by the cliffs of Cabo Espichel cape, Lagosteiros Beach is a site of great natural beauty.

Accessed down a path, much of this Beach is covered in pebbles with the main attraction being the fossilised dinosaur footsteps that are to be found in the surrounding rocky cliffs.

Ola Aires,

This is a very long building! I do like the point of view with the lady and cross taking the foreground. The light and clarity also make for a more pleasant composition. Nice work Aires :-)

I have a question : Any good reason that you chose EV+5? I would surely like to learn from this effect.

This is a good example of superb composition skill applied to a sanctuary perspective view, with wide angle and really very good depth. The clarity and sharpness is so good to allow a great view, taking full advantage of the strong light and yet avoid any OE.

I like best the small church building at the far end, as if the 2 rows of building at each side leading the eye to it.

Bonjour Aires,
les motifs répétitifs de cette longue façade contribuent bien à l'effet de perspective fuyante.
Malgré qu'elle soit prise en contre jour, tu as bien géré les lumières.
Je suis étonné de voir si peu de monde dans un endroit aussi vaste.

I remember this place from the previous photos, but I am still fascinated by the perspective, it draws you straight in. quite symbolic that the keen photographer is standing right in the shadow of the cross, it seems she is receiving divine protection and inspiration :)

Très bel effet de perspective contenu dans cette composition. Le sujet est très bien traité et valorise l'édifice religieux situé en arrière-plan.
Le cadrage a été réalisé avec soin en incluant le calvaire pour donner un effet de 3D du meilleur effet.

É realmente um local que convida a experimentar todo o tipo de perspectivas, pois as arcadas e o cruzeiro prestam-se a explorar o efeito de profundidade e de ritmo visual. A compo está de primeira e surpreende-me como está tão bem exposta sendo um contraluz. A senhora fotógrafa dá um ar humorístico, mas não me consigo decidir se, fora isso, não está a mais. É que está tão bem colocada...

este lugar é mesmo muito bonito e impressionante, sempre me lembro do dia em que o conheci. Aqui gostei do pov e do enquadramento, as cores não são o forte da compo, mas a luz é muito boa, valia à pena uma versão em B&P. A mulher está boa como marco de presença humana, mas preferia que estivesse numa posição mais natural, sem estar a fazer fotos. De modo geral é uma linda imagem, quem não conhece o lugar vai para lá, sem escalas
