Photographer's Note

This is a donkey from Miranda do Douro. We can recognize him because of the white spots around the eyes and the long hair (that usually falls in summer, as we can se if we look at his back). We can find several donkeys of Miranda in the Complex of Salt Ponds from Samouco, situated on the southern bank of the Vasco da Gama Bridge, right opposite to Lisbon.
This was once an area where salt was largely collected. Now, this activity has practically disappeared in this area, but since the 90's of the 20th century, when the bridge was built, a Foundation has been created to keep a Nature Reserve here, where some salt ponds are still kept and the many birds species who come to find food in these wet lands are protected and studied. Several donkeys from Miranda can also be found here, like this one.
