Photographer’s Note

If you follow the news about searching the missing aircraft of flight AF447 [*], you understand how difficult is the search and rescue in the ocean.
Portugal has the humanitarian mission of SAR (Search And Rescue) in a very large area of the North Atlantic Ocean (the largest in the European Union). Most of the SAR missions and regular patrolling are performed by the Navy and the Air Force (Portugal has no specific coast guard).
This picture, in Fonte da Telha, shows a C-130H aircraft of the Portuguese Air Force, beginning its mission over the Atlantic Ocean. The base of these sea patrol aircrafts is Air Base 6 (see it from the air), in Montijo, 20 km (12 miles) to the northeast of this beach.
See also my pictures of maritime SAR with the corvette NRP Afonso Cerqueira, more than 20 years ago.
Location of Fonte da Telha in WikiMapia: 38.5697015, -9.1945481.
