Photographer’s Note

The Portulaca oleracea is called purslane in English, but also pigweed and little hogweed. In Portuguese it is beldroega and baldorega (Southern dialects).
Is it food or weed? In the USA they are not sure. In Portugal it depends on the region. Generally, in Northern Portugal it is a hated weed that invades farms and gardens. In Southern Portugal, it is an edible vegetable, almost regarded as a delicatessen. Two of my preferred dishes are baldorega soup with chickpeas, and baldoregas with codfish.
Good news about Portulaca oleracea is that, among other great features, it contains more Omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable, normally found mostly in fish. Omega-3 [*] is known for great health benefits, namely for avoiding cardiovascular diseases.
The great advantage of the baldorega, where it is eaten, it's that it doesn't have to be cultivated. It propagates easily (see the small seeds in workshop) and grows wildly in farms and gardens, among the cultivated plants. It can even grow in urban settings, such as in the gaps of the sidewalk cobblestones (this photo), wall fissures (ws) or unused flowerpots (ws).
