Photographer’s Note

This is probably one of the most beautifull castles in Portugal, also one of the most intriguing around the world. It is located in a tiny island (75 by 310M) in the middle of the Tagus River.
The Moors of Almoravid are said to have built the first castle on the island, called Almorolan ("high rock" in Arabic). In 1129 the Moorish castle was conquered by the 17 year old Dom Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal.
The castle, which guarded a strategic river crossing, was given by the King to the Portuguese branch of the Knights Templar. It is said that the fabled treasure of the Templars is still hidden on the island.
