Lighthouse of the Cape of the Roca Photo

Photographer’s Note

Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) is a cape which forms the westernmost point of both mainland Europe and mainland Portugal. The cape is in the Portuguese municipality of Sintra, west of Lisbon district, and also forms the westernmost extent of the Serra de Sintra.

The cape's lighthouse and a tourist shop sit on top of the cliff. Construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1772, and the structure rises 144 meters in height above the cape. The cape is a popular tourist attraction, and the site features a monument with a crucifix bearing an inscription Portuguese:

No sábado passado fui lá fui à noite quando me dei conta que estava Lua Cheia, mas estava demasiado escuro e acabei por nem tirar a máquina do saco.

Fine shot under difficult light conditions. The light from the lighthouse building, however small, contrasts well with the overall blue atmosphere. Very nice!

I was going through your beautiful gallery and if I stopped here it's because I remember driving with my friends along this coast and being struck by the beauty of the ocean... I spent ten days in Lisbon and around, so I couldn't explore a lot, but your image brings back those wonderful days and makes me want to go back.
