Photographer’s Note

This kind of mills was very common along the west portuguese coast before the invasion of industrial mills moved by engines. The strong winds at these places moved the great wheel, dressed with triangular sails. The wheel movement was transmitted to complex mechanisms inside the building putting in movement heavy grinding circular stones, transforming the grain in flour. Nowadays, these mills are mostly derelict but many people have bought some of their remains and transformed them in small cottages, used mainly in Summer time.
