The Palace of Mitra, commonly known as Archbishops Palace is a former summer residence, first of the Archbishops, and after, the Patriarch of Lisbon, standing in the parish of St. Antão do Tojal in Loures.
The original palace was built by Archbishop Fernando de Vasconcelos, about 1554 (which is also the archbishop responsible for building the Church of St. Anthony's Tojal). This palace, in turn, replaced an early thirteenth-century house that belonged to Mitra in Lisbon. In the eighteenth century, the first patriarch of Lisbon, D. Thomas Adams, had it rebuilt in baroque style, the taste of the time. The architect responsible for the current traces was the Italian Canaveri, who worked on it until 1732.
The building presents itself in a U shape, the facade of Italian style, there are three Carrara marble, representing the statues of St. Bruno of Cologne (the founder of the Charterhouse), Queen Santa Isabel and the Immaculate Conception. Inside, the typical eighteenth-century Portuguese tiles, blue and white, is characterized by the wealth of themes and high quality pictorial (representations of the seasons, country scenes, hunting or fishing, mythological figures, represented themes emerge in the kitchens cooking ). Some of the tiles were later transferred to the Patriarchal Palace of Sao Vicente de Fora and are now at the National Museum of Ancient Art.
The Palace also includes two lofts, a two-mile pipeline intended to supply two fountains, one of them monumental, it also constructs the eighteenth century.
Throughout the twentieth century has undergone several restoration works funded by the Directorate-General for National Buildings and Monuments, which currently are based in the Palace of the facilities of Mitra's House Gaiato.
The whole of the palace, aqueduct, lofts, fountains, a chapel and even the monumental entrance gate is protected as a cultural heritage building by decree No. 30762 of September 26, 1940 and 32973 of August 18 1943.

Very beautiful architecture picture with an excellent light managment.
The stormy sky is a great backdrop and the shadows of the clouds create more variety on the pavement
of the square.
Best regards, Paul

Belo trabalho!

Such a big square, compslitely deserted, with menacing sky above, looks a bit scary. Nice colours and great sharpness.

With this masterfully taken picture and very informative note, you have made a perfectly good presentation of such an impressive architectural monument. In the picture, you have managed using the bad weather as an advantage for getting such a strong aesthetic effect. Very well done!

this is a very poetic impression of this beautiful architecture. The gentle colors and the nice light create a pleasant atmosphere. The photographer’s perspective is outstanding. What I like most is the interesting sky. A wonderful image, TFS!
Longroute (19396) 2011-08-05 8:32
This architecture is very harmonious and its disposition in this square creates a very neat and balanced composition. There is a good proportions balance between earth and sky and a very good sense of depth and space. Once again you exploited well the bad weather to produce an evocative and interesting image. Excellent sharpness and contras as in all your photos.
Have a nice evening,

Very typical architecture's - remind me of Coimbra at the law-school's yard. Good POV to show a vast praca within the palace.
The storm clouds enhances as a drama to occure there...
Bom fim de semana,

This old historic palace is still a beautiful building and I love the soft colours on the stonework as well as its surrounding. Well worth a visit! I like the detail and the textured pavement in the foreground, an excellent angle to shoot from in this rather moody day, dramatic sky and surreal look. Great architectural shot, Congrats

the view of Mitra Palace with the cloudy sky to enhance the light falling on the buildings.I like the L shape of the image with the main iron entrance of the Palace,to be so well decorated.

The steel blue sky makes a splendid backdrop for this lovely architecture to stand out against.
The richly textured stone street makes a lovely lead-n to this beautiful square.

mkamionka (30618) 2011-08-13 4:18
beautiful architecture and fantastic sky.
I would never expect such a sky in Portugal.
I don't know if it is just the processing but it really feels like it was taken at the very late evening.
The clouds enhance this dark atmosphere.
Have a great weekend,
