Photographer's Note

The Palace of Mitra, commonly known as Archbishops Palace is a former summer residence, first of the Archbishops, and after, the Patriarch of Lisbon, standing in the parish of St. Antão do Tojal in Loures.

The original palace was built by Archbishop Fernando de Vasconcelos, about 1554 (which is also the archbishop responsible for building the Church of St. Anthony's Tojal). This palace, in turn, replaced an early thirteenth-century house that belonged to Mitra in Lisbon. In the eighteenth century, the first patriarch of Lisbon, D. Thomas Adams, had it rebuilt in baroque style, the taste of the time. The architect responsible for the current traces was the Italian Canaveri, who worked on it until 1732.

The building presents itself in a U shape, the facade of Italian style, there are three Carrara marble, representing the statues of St. Bruno of Cologne (the founder of the Charterhouse), Queen Santa Isabel and the Immaculate Conception. Inside, the typical eighteenth-century Portuguese tiles, blue and white, is characterized by the wealth of themes and high quality pictorial (representations of the seasons, country scenes, hunting or fishing, mythological figures, represented themes emerge in the kitchens cooking ). Some of the tiles were later transferred to the Patriarchal Palace of Sao Vicente de Fora and are now at the National Museum of Ancient Art.

The Palace also includes two lofts, a two-mile pipeline intended to supply two fountains, one of them monumental, it also constructs the eighteenth century.

Throughout the twentieth century has undergone several restoration works funded by the Directorate-General for National Buildings and Monuments, which currently are based in the Palace of the facilities of Mitra's House Gaiato.

The whole of the palace, aqueduct, lofts, fountains, a chapel and even the monumental entrance gate is protected as a cultural heritage building by decree No. 30762 of September 26, 1940 and 32973 of August 18 1943.
