Mulheres do Mercado da Ribeira
(Women of the River Market)

Displayed here is a banner spanning the width of the top floor of the Mercado da Ribeira.
This floor used to be the flower market, but is now in use as exposition space and Loja de Artesanato (tiles, glasswork, traditional foodstuff etc). In the exposition space photos of the end of the 19th century were on display, the time when this Mercado was built.

The Mercado was inaugurated in 1882. After a fire which destroyed it, was rebuilt between 1902 and 1930 superintended by Pessoano Garcia.. On the ground floor of the The Mercado da Ribeira is Lisbon's biggest open food market, is a miniature city of stalls given over to an unbelievable selection of fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and seafood .
