Photographer's Note

The Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Mary Major (Santa Maria Maior de Lisboa or Sé de Lisboa) is a Roman Catholic parish church. The oldest church in the city is the see of the Archdiocese of Lisbon. Since the beginning of the construction of the cathedral, in the year 1147, the building has been modified several times and survived many earthquakes. It is nowadays a mix of different architectural styles.

Good Morning Daniel,

I find the use of the window, a most attractive natural border. There is a lovely contrast from the shade, to the light, and it allows the fretwork to be noticed. I would imagine that, apart from the aerials, this scene is unchanged for centuries.

Hello Daniel,
The attractive arched window makes a splendid frame for the view outside resulting in some interesting light and shadow contrasts. Apart from the TV aerials this scene has probably not changed much for very many years.

Beautiful scenery of the red tiled roofs and the sea is visible through the well composed archway. The dark and subdued light of the interior of the cathedral makes for a perfect frame to the bright, sharp and colourful imagery outside.
The beautiful craftsmanship amd masonary work on the Cathedral is well captured here. The strong light and shadow enhances this effect; as we are looking out into the bright blue sky and the deep colours of the sea.

Hello Daniel - you have managed the light well in this nicely composed shot. Making the most of the light and shade on the interior walls you have very good detail in both and I love the contrast between 'inside' and 'outside' where the interior looks so cool compared to the warm, sunny view outside. A composition which works well and has lots of appeal. Warm regards rosemary
