Downpour approaching Photo

Photographer’s Note

It's no surprise that this place so well represented in TE, not only in this gallery, but also on those of Colares and Praia da Ursa, because it's a very picturesque area and it happens to be the Westernmost point of continental Europe. Curiously, there aren't many photos taken from this side (North); nearly everybody photographs only the other side.

Usually I don't do much plans to go shooting and this day was no exception. I remember I hesitated in bringing the camera with me because the weather was very unstable - sometimes there was sun, other times it rained. I had to drive my son to a birthday party not far away, so I found myself alone with a couple of hours to spare. I guess I wasn't so unlucky, as after it started raining in Guincho, I went to Cabo da Roca, thinking about spending the rest of the afternoon reading in a cafe. But the sun came out again, so there I went with my camera. However, I miscalculated the time it would take the heavy rain that was falling near the horizon to reach me, therefore suddenly I was caught by the rain about 300 meters (1000 ft) from the car. It may not sound such a great distance, but the rain was so heavy that it was more than enough to get completely soaked.

Hi Jose, this is the first time I am seeing a photo of Cabo da Roca taken from this point. I especially liked the spring flowers on the foreground and picturesque lighthouse at the background. Combination of the turquoise-silver colour of the ocean with the green vegetation seems wonderful. Congratulations.

PS. By the way how do you write your latitude and longtitude? Do u have a GPS? :)

Hello José,

In American vernacular, you have hit a home run with this photograph. You've captured the astoundingly beautiful view in perfect sunlight. The light beaming though breaks in the cloud illuminate the sea in a dramatic fashion, and the rust colored flowers of early spring add a color highlight that a painter would have to create — no one expects such a combination of natural beauty, colors, and of course what you have supplied, the artistic eye, and the post processing.

I can say this is an excellent choice of the day with such powerful light from the right and yet you retained some shadow in the gorge. A fantastic composition of very beautiful scenery of the cliff and buildings atop. The stormy sky really makes a strong presence.

This is a well composed shot! The off center placement of the lighthouse is fine giving the photo a nice sense of direction. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF.

Bom dia José, conheço bem a zona enquanto explorava as caminhadas ao longo da zona. Estou a reconhecer o acesso à praia da ursa. Aliás, acho que indo por aqui abaixo também se chega lá...Até pensei que esta tinha sido tirada na instabilidade de chuvas que aconteceu no último mês, mas já vi que não. Gosto muito da diagonal perfeita que sai do cantinho e nos leva ao farol. O dramatismo do clima foi bem capturado e só tenho pena de não ver o farol a brilhar mais, ou a contrastar mais com o fundo pois acaba por se esfumar um pouco ali atrás. Ainda assim a paisagem de falésias abruptas não deixa de ser impressionante. O WS é uma boa imagem complementar para nos mostrar de onde esta foi tirada e o 'v' da composição é interessante.

A partir de um ponto de vista muito bem escolhido e diferenciado (acho que nunca vira o Cabo da Roca deste ponto de vista), tua composição foi realmente muito esmerada, colocando todos os elementos que compõem a foto na melhor posição para torná-la da melhor qualidade possível! Além disso, a nitidez e a exposição estão perfeitas! Luzes e sombras em perfeita harmonia! Texturas maravilhosas! Enfim... gostei muito e realmente é um trabalho de primeira linha!

Comparing this with the one in the WS we can see the weather system was moving fast. No wonder you chose this as your main post as the light is fantastic, glinting on the sea and making wonderful contrasts in the cliffs. There is wonderful drama in the ever-changing sky. I'm pretty sure we have been there over 20 years ago. I scrolled down the coast and see it is close to where we stayed. You wouldn't have got wet if you were in England as you would have already been wearing your waterproofs! ;D

Uma tomada incomum, realmente. E muito bonita! A diagonal com o sol está a propiciar uma luminosidade fantástica! Dentro do contexto da imagem, se a gente imaginar a terra na sua rotação habitual, daqui a pouco, o Cabo da Roca vai-se esconder no canto inferior esquerdo e o Brasil vai aparecer no canto superior direito do campo visual... um "regard" sobre a rota dos Descobrimentos ;-)

Tu as bien fait d'apporter ta caméra pour prendre cette magnifique photo. Le temps nuageux donne une différente atmosphère et souvent de belles couleurs, parfois mieux que trop ensoleillé. On doit avoir une belle vue de la-haut. 300 mètres sous la pluie, je crois que c'est plutôt 1000 pieds que 100 ou bien tu voulais dire 30 mètres. Bonne composition et intéressante note.

Hi JOse, this is for me indeed a new POV from this place and a beautiful one. What a pitty i only take a walk on the other side. Maybe sometimes i will return there and then i sure will walk to teh right side. The mood and POV is lovely here. Did you saturate the colors on PP to get the greens like this? Or only work with highlights?

Excelente pov para mostrar este local, que realmente não é muito visto por aqui. Gosto do sol reflectido na falésia e no farol, com o mar à sombra, lá bem ao fundo. Estas flores em primeiro plano também estão muito bem colocadas.

Cette lumière et ce ciel, que nous avons aussi en Bretagne, sont superbes. Cela donne un relief extraordinaire au paysage et des contrastes de couleurs vraiment plaisants. Il aurait été dommage de ne pas faire la photo à cause de la pluie, ces moments sont tellement fugaces. Merci José.

This seascape is to my liking very much as you well know. The flatness (contrast) of the coastline while the sea is beautifully lit up is well captured. What is that building on the cliff, is it a lighthouse? Awesome cloud formations, and very natural colours. As they say you should always have the camera with you. You did a excellent job recording such beauty.

La verdad que tus dos fotos están muy bien captadas, es muy difícil decidir por cual escoger, quizás esta tiene mas dramatismo con la presencia del impresionante precipicio y las flores en primer plano pero creo que las dos son muy buenas. Felicitaciones.

les lumières spectaculaires sont vraiment exquises ici. Ce pic rocheux semble se détacher avec beaucoup de relief par rapport à l'arrière plan. Peut-être sont-ce les couleurs qui accentuent cela.
Un cadrage bien étudié et un bon placement, tu as su rendre à cet endroit, tout son charme.

Acho que nunca vi O Cabo da Roca assim tão verdinho e com tantas flores de muitas cores. Para mim, está linda. O teu pp está bonito e gosto do jogo de luz e sombras sobre o terreno acidentado. O farol parece um pouco pálido mas, vê-se bem.

Parecia-me que já tinha comentado esta.
A luz e sombras dão um belo efeito, principalmente na parte de terra. O contorno do farol (e horizonte à esquerda) é que parece um pouco artificial.
