Photographer’s Note

A windmill in operation in Odemira, the Alentejo region in Portugal.
Nestling quietly on the banks of the River Mira, the sleepy town of Odemira is situated 20 km inland from the picturesque Alentejo coast.
It was granted an official charter in 1256 by King Afonso III, and throughout the centuries was inhabited by the Romans and the Moors, who built a castle in the centre of the town they called Wadi Emir.
Besides the fountain in the main square, the main points of interest include the churches of Salvador and Santa Maria.
Located at a high point on the edge of town, one of the Alentejo’s best-preserved windmills stands as a working display of the traditional methods used to process the region’s wheat and corn.
Odemira is also well-known for its pottery workshop, where visitors can witness the skilful production of earthenware and other local handicrafts.
Nearby. Besides being the source of the River Mira, the large Santa Clara dam nearby is a popular water sports centre and summer bathing area. Visitors should also see the Águas Natural Park, where the typical Alentejan landscape and regional-style buildings can be appreciated.
Some of Portugal’s best beaches can be found a short drive west of Odemira, most notably Zambujeira do Mar and Almograve further north.

Hallo Paul,

Geen enkele molen ter wereld kan tegen de Nederlandse molen op, maar toch zijn al die andere varianten in andere landen erg mooi om te zien. Hier de ronde koektrommel met mooie blauwe kleuren geschilderd. Neem aan dat de molenaar er naast op het bankje zit, dat geeft er iets fraais aan, prima plaat.

Very interesting picture. The sky looks amazing and the windmill accentuates those tones since it has some similar colors. Also nice to see a person in the shot on the right.

Beautiful capture of this uniquely designed windmill with its lovely blue and white colors that blend so beautifully with the blue sky and its wispy clouds.

Everything is nice here, the windmill, the colours, the light and the sky. And, of course, the man waiting for the wind to do the job. He is a true environmentalist even if he, most likely, does not know the meaning of that big word!!! Well done.

Portugal has also a windmill, I just know, I think Holland has only a windmill. As usual color coordination and composition is excellent. This photo can be directly a postcard which can be sold for tourists.

I love all this blue here Paul. It's a nice study and the fact that you got the miller in the too makes it all that better. I would love to see some movement in the blades though because the sky tells us that it's windy - 2 second exposure would be great! Just my opinion, still a great photo. Regards, TW
