Mértola is a picturesque village in the District of Beja, Alentejo region, is a village located in a beautiful area blessed by nature, on the shore of Guadiana river
Strolling through the streets of Mértola repairs on its rich history, a reflection of his past, for here they walked the Phoenicians (who created an important commercial port), Romans, Visigoths, and Moors who left a very strong brand in the village that denotes this historic Heritage, the importance of this landmark locale along the centuries
Mértola boasts the biggest Islamic Museum of Europe to exhibit exclusively Islamic art pieces.
Its history, combine with customs and traditions so well kept, as are the traditional products: meat, bread, honey, goat cheeses and famous sheep, sausages, sweets and weaving, without forgetting the fresh fish supplied by the Guadiana river.
