A rather colourful narrow street in the little seaside town of Burgau in western Algarve, made more colourful by the bright clothes hanging outside a shop and the brightly dressed young couple walking downhill towards the beach.
The street, which you can explore more fully if you look at this map and drag the little yellow man down to the red cross and pan around, is actually called "Rua 25 de Abril" or "Street of 25th April", a name which celebrates in Portugal the date, in 1974, of the "Carnation Revolution" which led to the fall of the "Estado Novo" (a corporatist authoritarian regime installed in Portugal in 1933) and the withdrawal of Portugal from its African colonies.
The name "Carnation Revolution" comes from the fact no shots were fired and, when the population started descending the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship and war in the colonies, carnation flowers were put into the muzzles of rifles and on the uniforms of the army. The Portuguese celebrate the national holiday of Freedom Day on 25 April every year to celebrate the revolution.
P.S. After reading a critique from Gunnar (saxo042), I'm reminded that I forgot to show you this map - if you drag the little yellow man down to the red cross, you can pan around and have a "virtual walk" down this street!

That's a very casual-looking photograph that invites me for some relaxing moments (I cannot have now...).
Sharpness, exposure, colors, vertical format, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
TFS - congrats,

Yes, a very colourful scene, but typical of European holiday destinations. That means shops shops and more shops!(I can almost see you cringe.)Makes me feel good as I`m transported there.

Great composition, I especially like the clothing rack on the left and the lovely contrasting colours.

Hi John.It takes a lot of courage to put flowers into the barrels of guns (unlike slaughtering innocent shoppers as happened in Kenya just today). Great holiday mood in this sunny and colourful image.Lovely details in this descending street. Regards. Klaudio.

Despite of the touristic development , Burgau has still a lot of charm . With picturesque little streets as this one . This is a superb view of it , full of colors and of the algarvian sun .
Have you visted Salema , not far from Burgau ?

Your eye for color is superb, and this scene is a perfect example. I doubt many would have thought to compose this scene with the colorful shirts on the left, but they work perfectly in this scene, drawing the eye in with their vibrancy, and allowing the eye to meander down the beautiful street. The blue of the building contrasts so nicely with the vivid reds too. All captured under great light too, and an excellent note. So is this where the iconic image of the child placing the flower in the barrel of the gun comes from? Fascinating.
All the best

You have included plenty of red colours here. There is also a good depth in the picture with these clothes very close and people that add life and interest. A fine street scene and with the help of the yellow man we can explore the whole area.

A well composed shot that makes good use of the line of the cobbles and the line of the shadow to take our eye nicely through the scene. You have included people who are all positioned well so as to enhance a sense of depth.
You have made excellent use of the rack of shirts to create FG interest too. My only camera club type comment might be that the red colours of the shirts and the Coca Cola sign, along with the yellow of the guy's shorts, seem a bit on the high side of vibrance for my eye and I am viewing this via an EIZO CG246 monitor that has been calibrated - so there!

Oh I love that map view, i look at it every time.
this little scene reminds me of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia, has the same type of feel and look, minus a few hundred people!!
and of course the coke sign has to be there too! haha
and for me personally, i enjoy the wires, even if some people don't like them in the scene as it gives a natural feel to the local area.
looks like you had a great time John!
seems like you visited alot of smaller towns...no Lisbon??

Most interesting notes.
I knew nothing of this despite having visited the Algarve. I remember it well as it was the first time I had ever flown!
I just had to ask you, how did you manage walking on those shiny tiles? I found myself going two forward and one back! But, maybe that was due to the sandals that I was wearing!
I like the chosen viewpoint, using the vibrant clothes for immediate attention but, then, using the cobbled road to lead to the focal figures. The people guide us down the road and there is a definite sense of curiosity, wondering where they are going, what is round the corner.
I have to say, thank goodness for Elements, at a time like this, when there are strong light differences!
My warm regards,
Thank you for your hints about my secret holiday! In actual fact, we went to Anglesey, on the N.W. coast. It was beautiful both for scenery and weather, oh and of course, company!
