Photographer’s Note

Despite its location less than 200 meters from my home during my teenage years, I know very little about this chapel and I have never went inside it, namely because I don't remember having seen it open. I was always a bit intrigued how it managed to stay in a relatively good shape while no body seemed to care for it. Like much of the old parts of Portalegre, this area was recently renovated. In "my time" there was a scarp instead of that stone wall and the painting of the church wasn't in such a good shape.

I guess that is another construction of the 18th century which are found in every place where Portuguese were at the time, from Brazil to Goa. It's called Capela do Calvário (Calvary Chapel).

Yes, Looks like it's been well maintained with it's paint!
the pov is just great to have the chapel against the beautiful blue sky, makes a nice balanced in colour contrast!

bem interessantes essas papagolfades, e difícil escolher qual o melhor PDV, mas fico com esse, principalmente por causa da cruz, que deixa a composição bem interessante. De qualquer forma as duas fotos ficaram ótimas, belo trabalho.

I wonder what your thinking was to decide between this and the one in the WS. Maybe you didn't want to show the town in the background? Or you wanted the cross in? I prefer the WS composition (Although - you know me - I would have straightened the verticals ;D) I love the symmetry of it; it's so easy on the eye. I assume it is built on a hill and the WS allowed for a higher POV, which I also prefer. Those two little birds in the sky also add to the composition. It does look like a pretty little church and such a pity it isn't used, although kept in good condition.

Nice one Jose, superb details and color and the WS puts it into an unexpected context. The top shot seems to be part of a much larger church then the reality, great presentation.

Vou contradizer todo mundo aqui e dizer que prefiro o WS, embora todas as duas sejam ótimas. Lá no WS, gostei muito do desenho geométrico das bordas amarelas (bege?)... dão a impressão quase de movimento de um lápis. Muito interessante!

Bom dia José, esqueceste-te de fazer um link para a minha foto desta igreja :))))) A verdade é que não a encontrei em Portalegre e já percebi porquê: coloquei-a em Monforte...Na realidade, neste momento até tenho dúvidas que seja a mesma igreja, mas é demasiada coincidência haver duas igrejas tão parecidas tão perto uma da outra e com o mesmo nome. É que esta parece novinha em folha comparada com a minha e há detalhes mínimos que são diferentes. Lembro-me de um muro a chatear que dava a volta completa mas não era este que se vê aqui. Por outro lado, não me lembro de ver Portalegre ao fundo como se vê no WS - um pormenor que gosto, aliás. Esta é sem dúvida a melhor foto jogando bem com a cruz, o muro e o céu mas ainda bem que mostras a outra para mais contexto. Tudo está muito natural e suave ao contrário da minha, que ao pé desta parece absolutamente exagerada.

Absolutely amazing capture while the Capela do Calvário's authentic colors and shapes makes it a wonderful one. I liked its white facade with yellow stripes and great contrasts of terracotta roof tiles. Excellently build point of view.

Hola José.
Aquí hay algo muy interesante, cuando vi esta excelente foto me hice la idea que la iglesia era grande, imponente y que la parte inferior pertenecía al cuerpo de ella, sin embargo al ver tu WS me doy cuenta que es pequeña y lo que pensé era parte del cuerpo de ella no es mas que la base donde esta construida. De nuevo interesante decisión de cual escojo como la mejor foto, creo que me voy por la que tienes en el WS ya que la vista es mas amplia y se ve parte de la ciudad donde pasaste parte de tu juventud, la composición de las dos es muy buena así como los colores y la definicion. Buen POV en ambas.

Bonjour José,

On sent que cette chapelle est entretenue avec soin quand on voit la qualité de l'édifice. Un point de vue qui lui donne beaucoup de relief face à ce beau ciel bleu. J'aime beaucoup la photo en WS qui nous donne un meilleur aperçu de sa forme originale. Une série intéressante et de qualité, merci José.

Olá José,
el encuadre hacia arriba da una bonita perspectiva a esta elegante iglesia, cuyos tonos dorados y blancos se destacan sobre el azul del cielo.
Buena Papagolfade, sin duda, y tanto esta foto como la del WS son buenas, con encuadres distintos, pero efectivos. Especialmente el de ésta, con la cruz que añade un elemento muy interesante y aumenta el grafismo de la composición.
Buen trabajo.

A foto está bonita só não gosto deste bloco de pedra em bico no primeiro plano , gostei da cruz e das cores da igreja fazem um belo contraste contra o céu que está magnifico , gosto mais da foto do WS , bons detalhes, parabéns!!!

Não gosto muito deste muro, mas paciência.
A torre, pelo menos vista assim, faz lembrar aquelas do sudeste asiático.
