Photographer’s Note

One of things that makes me a bit sad is that I do very little photography with people, which is something that I liked much doing in the past. I had never thought about posting anything from this series I made during a friends gathering (dinner, of course!), but I changed my mind yesterday while I was finally selecting and PP'ing the shots I did that night.

I wonder if the photos are really worth posting. I wouldn't be surprised if most of you find them just lousy snapshots. If you find that, please be honest to tell me. The personal attachment to depicted subjects and situations is something that always bias our judgement on the quality of our shots, but that is more acute when the subject are persons we know.

I admit that this shot can be labelled as just a friends' snapshot, but I hope it also fits the "daily life" category. Not that I am lucky enough to have joyful events like this in every days dinners, but showing what people do in a friends gathering is as important to learn about the world as other kinds of photos.

For the sake of not risking having this post removed, I could omit that they are my friends and I could just note that the fellow on the left is António Eustáquio, a talented professional musician who is best known as player of Portuguese guitar, although he excels in playing much more instruments and he is also a composer. Among many other projects in which he was or is involved, from classical music to rock and jazz or fusion, I find particularly interesting his works using the Portuguese guitar in classical music, like Vivaldi [link to audio excerpts] and J.S. Bach.

The Portuguese guitar, the instrument he is playing, is a key instrument in fado, the best known traditional Portuguese music genre. Although I wouldn't label these as exactly fado, you can listen to others excerpts of musics played by A. Eutáquio here:

Suite das folhas, composed by himself.

Verdes anos, composed by Carlos Paredes, probably the most brilliant composer and player of Portuguese guitar of all times.

Astúrias nº5, from the Suite española of the Spanish/Catalan composer Isaac Albéniz.
