After a couple of years, I'm posting another photo of this event that I like a lot. It was taken yesterday, Saint Anthony's day, in the mountain, not far from Mangualde, near Viseu. There's a very old feast that takes place there, near a small church devoted to S. António dos Cabaços. On this day, in the morning, most part of the shepherds in the area bring their goats and sheep for the celebrations. The tradition started because the shepherds moved their flocks from the Estrela Mountain to Montemuro Mountain, where there was more and greener pasture during the hot season and this was a place where they used to stop when they were on their way.
Early in the morning, there's a procession and an outdoor mass, when all the animals present are blessed by the priest. Then, they are kept in the shadow under the trees, as it's usually hot. At around 04.00 or 05.00 in the afternoon, when it's getting cooler for them, each one of the shepherds brings them to near the chapel. They start from the right side of the chapel and they go around it a few times, always with the shepherd in front, leading them. This way the sheperds are thanking the saint for the protection their animals have received during the last year and they also ask for protection for the next year. After that, they are taken home. On this day, the fields around the church are full of locals who come to make picnics and watch the celebrations. Some of the animals are decorated.

It is good to see another photo of this tradition. I like the two figures colourfully dressed in the FG. An interesting and very well taken picture. An excellent note too.

An interesting reporting of this old tradition that is still held in honor.
It's a beautiful sight of the shepherd and his sheep making circles around the chapel.
Very good composition, clarity and sharpness.
Best regards, Paul

Ola Ana ,
une très belle tradition , et un superbe cliché , lumineux et coloré . Etonnant comme le troupeau suit le berger autour de la petite chapelle de pierre .

it is important that old traditions are recognised and supported so it is very pleasing to see this nicely composed shot with good use being made of the upright format, the two colourful figures in the FG add a nice touch as do the hurrying sheep.
Warm regards Les.

On se demande si le berger fait la course avec ses moutons autour de ce bâtiment rond. En tout cas, les spectateurs ne manquent pas. Les couleurs sont joliment saturées.

Very fine traditional scene. I hope I'll see this kind of images in August, I'll be in Porto for 9 days. :)

This is a beautiful tradition, and your capture of it really takes the sense of it very well indeed. I think that it was a great idea to include the two people on the lower left watching the event, as it gives the image a scene of spectacle and lets he viewer know that this is something special to witness. Very fine image taking in lots of detail.
Thanks as always

This is an interesting and rather touching tradition which creates excellent photo opportunities. By including such a remarkably colourful couple in the foreground you managed a very eye-catching and attractive photo. My compliments also to a well written note.

I like this depiction of the traditional setting and custom very much, it's one of my favourite in your series (I remember the previous series too). Your composition is thorough and elegant, the action has been captured with great timing and the presence of the spectators is superb. They add interest and colour to the foreground, also dynamism and depth. I love the light, the strong shadows, the natural textures and the rich colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,

lindo ângulo apanhando os visitantes, os animais dando a sua volta ao redor da capela, que tem um estilo arquitetônico muito bonito. uma foto muito bem feita e mostrando um evento que pode vir a desaparecer.
