And, as Carnival finished almost two weeks ago, my series is also almost finished. This is the moment the dolls are burnt in the treshing floor of the village. Nowadays they have some fireworks inside to give a nicer effect.
Carnival in Lazarim is still very authentic. Here, on Tuesday, the "caretos" (people wearing a mask like this one and also costumes) come to the street to show their originality. These masks are sculpted on alder wood, by a few artisans in the village. It takes many hours to do a mask like this one. Each participant has a new mask every year because there is a contest for the best masks and also for the best "caretos". The masks may have horns, moustache, snakes...
There are several villages in the north of Portugal and also in Spain where these celebrations with masks take place. According to some studies, they have their origins in the Celtic cults and they are closely related to the winter solstice and also to fertility.

Mustn't forget the vibrant and colourful main character of the carnival, drawing my attention instantly here; the doll waiting for its fate while the expressions in the background look decidedly unimpressed and don't appear to enjoy for the occasion! Wonder what they're thinking, the reason is understandable, perhaps too sad to end in this manner. This close up is excellent well observed and shot that has more overall visual interest and suggests at a story to tell.. the detail in the costumes is something else! Well done shot but sad way to end the carnival and your serie... Congrats

Quite a cast of characters in the background watching this pass by, there's interest in all facets of this shot. The smoke definitely enhances the atmosphere and reinforces the events action. I really like the stark contrast between the bright and colorful doll as a main point of focus against the more muted tones of the backdrop. This has been a fun series to follow, festive and full of personality. Thanks for taking us along. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Take care.

superb continuation of your series!
This time, thanks to this smoke you were able to create and convey more "mysterious" aspect and character of this event.
Also for contrast reasons is the shot so spectacular.
Have a nice day
