Photographer's Note

I'll return to my photos of Serra d'Ossa. Now it's time for a break to show one of the most Portuguese celebrations of Carnival in Portugal. It takes place in a village in the mountains, near Lamego. It's called Lazarim! Here, on Tuesday, the "caretos" (people wearing a mask like this one and also costumes) come to the street to show their originality. These masks are sculpted on alder wood, by a few artisans in the village. It takes many hours to do a mask like this one. Each participant has a new mask every year because there is a contest for the best masks and also for the best "caretos". The masks may have horns, moustache, snakes...This one was being used by a little boy that was participating for the first time. The festival has some important moments that I'll post later.
