A Casa de Mateus foi edificada durante a primeira metade do século XVIII por António José Botelho Mourão (1688-1746), 3º Morgado de Mateus. A capela foi terminada pelo seu filho: D. Luís António de Sousa Botelho Mourão (1722-1798).

A Casa de Mateus é uma edificação barroca de planta rectangular, estruturada em dois corpos laterais, implantados no sentido noroeste/sudeste, e ligadas entre si, ao nível das fachadas posterior e principal, por duas alas que lhe são perpendiculares, conferindo ao conjunto uma grandiosidade e beleza de raro efeito plástico e arquitectónico.

O conjunto é ainda complementado com a Capela da Casa, situada a nordeste da mesma, de natureza estilística algo diferenciada do corpo principal do palácio, mas nem por isso menos exuberante nos pormenores decorativos, e igualmente marcante pela altura que patenteia e pela volumetria que lhe está associada, conferindo um equilíbrio notável à totalidade da edificação.

Os diversos anexos existentes no espaço da cerca, com realce para o edifício da “Nova Adega”, uma construção que data, originariamente, do séc. XVI, situada nas proximidades da capela, em frente à fachada norte do edifício principal; o denominado “Barrão”, localizado em zona mais distante da Casa, certamente celeiro e espaço de “arrumos” da eira que se estende à sua frente; e ainda os magníficos jardins que rodeiam o edifício principal, completam toda esta estrutura edificada, conferindo-lhe características muito próprias e permitindo possibilidades de “tratamento” museológico excepcional, pela funcionalidade e capacidade de adaptação de cada espaço considerado às novas funções que se pretendem introduzir no circuito expositivo da Casa.

"The House of Mateus was built during the first half of century XVIII for António Jose Botelho Mourão (1688-1746), 3º First-born son of Mateus. The chapel was finished by its son: D. Luis António de Sousa Botelho Mourão (1722-1798).

The House of Mateus is a baroque construction of plant to rectangular, structuralized in two bodies lateral, implanted in the direction the Southeastern northwest/, and on between itself, to the level of the façades posterior and main, for two sections that it are perpendicular, conferring to the set a grandiosidade and beauty of rare plastic and architectural effect.

The set still is complemented with the Chapel of the House, situated northeast of the same one, estilística nature something differentiated it main body it palace, but nor therefore less exuberant in the decorative details, and equally marcante for the height that patent and the volumetria that is associated to it, conferring a balance notable to the totality of the construction.

The diverse existing annexes in the space of the fence, with distinction for the building of the “New Cellar”, a construction that dates, originarily, of séc. XVI, situated in the neighborhoods of the chapel, in front of the façade north of the main building; the called “Barrão”, located in more distant zone of the House, certainly granary and space of “arrumos” of eira that it is extended to its front; e still the magnificent gardens that encircle the main building, complete all very this built structure, conferring characteristic proper and allowing possibilities to it of “bonanza museológico treatment”, for the functionality and capacity of adaptation of each space considered to the new functions that if they intend to introduce in the expositivo circuit of the House.
