Mateus is a little village nearby Vila Real known for its manor belonging to the Counts of Vila Real, where the famous Mateus semi-sparkling rose wine is made.
Solar de Mateus was the residence of a family who made fortune by import and export trade with the overseas colonies. The residence dates from the first half of the 18C, built by Nicolau Nasoni and is a perfect example of Portuguese Baroque architecture. The adjacent Baroque chapel is built in 1750 by the same architect.
