Basilica de Santa Luzia


Situated atop the hill of Santa Luzia in Viana do Castelo, the Basilica of Santa Luzia, was begun to build in 1903 and completed in 1943, a project by architect Miguel Ventura Terra.

The final phase of construction of the basilica, which is regarded as inspired by the Basilica of Sacre Coeur, Montmartre, Paris, would be directed by architect Miguel Nogueira, who had to work on the granite, with the master bed, Emidio Pereira Lima .

Plant is built on a Greek cross-shaped elements and its architecture is neo-Romanesque and Byzantine basilica at the top of a balcony allows for days without fog, a vast panorama of the region.

The bronze statue of the Sacred Heart, placed at the entrance, dated 1898, is by the sculptor, Aleixo Queiroz Ribeiro, the two cherubim of the high altar, are by the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida and carved by Master Emidio Lima Albino and Lima, marble Vila Viçosa.

The stained glass rose windows were executed in the workshop of Richard Leone, in Lisbon, the fresco represents the Way of the Cross and the Ascension of Christ in the dome, is author, M. Pereira da Silva. The carillon consists of 26 bells.
