Photographer's Note

Hello friends and colleagues , today this once again invite you to stroll through a beautiful ancient city in northern Portugal, this is the Republic Square , I hope you like it , then a few letters of the city.

The city of Viana do Castelo spans the southern slope of Monte Santa Luzia to the banks of the river estuary very close to Lima , is a populated since prehistoric times that eventually became a village of fishermen.

During the sixteenth century with improved navigation techniques , the Portuguese boats reached Newfoundland and was able to establish a strong and lucrative trade with Brazil was a significant enrichment of the population and also led to the construction of numerous palaces and Manueline renaissance during the fifteenth century Viana was established in a large colony of Jews from Catalonia who contributed to the commercial launch of the villa.

Today, the historic center of Viana do Castelo is one of the most beautiful in northern Portugal and retains a wealth of monuments as a whole cobblestone streets , ideal for leisurely walks .

The core is lively Praça da República , with some of the best examples of Portuguese architecture of the sixteenth century , as the Casa da Camera , Manueline style , displaying a gallery of arches and the shield of the city, along with a caravel recalling that several sailors participated Villa great discoveries overseas .

Among the buildings surrounding the square is the Mercy House built in 1520 which features a monumental door and two floors with elegant balconies with railings supported by caryatids , and Sotomayor 's house , decorated with Renaissance motifs .

The center of the square is dominated by a large source of the XVI century with four pipes , topped by an armillary sphere around the terraces of the bars in the area , giving it lively and a touch of color to this beautiful stretch plaza.
Around the plaza are other buildings such as the Mother Church of the fifteenth century with some Compostela influences.

Face it , there is a beautiful Renaissance-style facade , and on its northern side , the Casa dos Velhos , the sixteenth century that belonged to the discoverer of the Congo , João Velho.
Another segment worth the travel urban Velho Hospital is now home to the headquarters of the regional tourist office and the Palace of the Counts of Carreira , listed as one of the most beautiful in the city and become the town hall .
Loitering In this we must not overlook the journey through the streets of Sao Pedro and Candido dos Reis , where are some of the best noble houses of the city, and visit the local museum, housed in a palace of the eighteenth century.
Inside the palace is covered with paneling and tile panels themed scenes collected from homes across the continents. There are pieces in the museum of great interest, as tombstones , votive offerings , Indo- Portuguese furniture and especially a splendid collection of Portuguese faience blue in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Out of monumental center , which was walled in ancient times, is the Luis de Camoes Avenue , separated from the river by a beautiful garden and bridge designed by Eiffel Viana and built in 1878 replacing the previous wooden bridge.
At the exit of the inlet, before the river meets with the Atlantic you can see the Castle of Santiago da Barra, built under Philip II to defend the port of frequent pirate attacks .

Atop the Monte de Santa Luzia , which descends to the mouth of the river Lima, and holds the remains of a prehistoric citania , is the basilica of the same name in Neo-Byzantine style cosntruida late last century and with some influences of Sacre Coeur Paris .
The temple is accessible via a monumental staircase , road or even a funicular.
It is a very sleek construction and also as an excellent vantage point over the coastal strip , the river and the same population that extends into the lower part of the mountain.
