Here's another photo of the same Espigueiros, where the details are more visible. This nucleus is formed by more than twenty well preserved Espigueiros. We can also see part of the treshing floor where they have been built.
They are situated in Soajo, a village situated in the Peneda-Gêres National Park, in the North, very close to the border with Spain.
Espigueiros are a type of Raccards that are very common in the North of Portugal and Spain. Most part of them are still being used today. They are built in granite and wood - the construction depended a lot on the economic situation of the family and it is the place where the farmers use to place the crops (mainly corn) to keep them safe and far from the rodents. On both sides it usually has narrow openings to let the corn dry. In Portugal we have several well preserved nucleus like this one, in Soajo and a bigger one in Lindoso, a few kms far.
This one has around 24 espigueiros, the oldest one dating from the end of the 18th century. They can be found in the village, on a high granite stone that became the treshing floor .

A nice follow up to the previous, these are really interesting and even a bit unexpected. It's always refreshing to see something out the ordinary, especially when it's been presented so well such as this. A strong point of view here that aids in understanding the dimension and construction of these Espigueiros. Very well presented with sharp focus, putting attention on the detail and textures. I quite enjoy this composition also, allowing for the ones on the side and small portions of those in the back to be visible...creating a nice little "community." :) Thanks for sharing a pleasing and informative look at these structures. Enjoy the day ahead. take care.

What unusual structures, and what a beautiful photograph to present them to us! At first I thought I was looking at some form of above-ground tomb somewhere in the Far East, Buddhist maybe, though the crosses give the lie to that! Instead we have grain stores. I should have realised: in England too we have traditional barns raise above ground on "staddle stones" very much like the ones in your picture, in order to keep the barns ventilated and free of vermin. Your polarizer has done wonders for the sky.

well, you are certainly showing us a new part of Portugal! I have never ever heard of such structures.
And you're talking about them as if you have a life long knowledge :)
such a perfect post for TE, learning about the world through photos
what better way than this, great photo.
lots of details and textures, and the royal blue sky is a fine way to top it off.

Interesting buildings looking like small chapels but at the same time are used for trashing. The deep blue sky sets a beautiful contrast to the rural scenery. Well done

This is a beautiful photograph from your beautiful country and you have written a very interesting and informative note. I have never before heard of "Espigueiros" and they appear to be very attractive even although they are simply stores for grain. Very nice that they have been preserved because I presume that nowadays such stores are simply modern structures built of concrete and metal, just as they are here in Britain?
Lovely light and colours, a pleasant and striking composition, a wonderful deep blue sky and exquisite details and sharpness.

very interesting subject and so photogenic as well. Great composition with some more stones in the foreground. The weather was fantastic with the uniformly dark blue sky, I like it. Very eye catching geometry.
