In medieval times, Gaia is riverside area began to achieve importance as a ship-yard and commercial centre, achieving levels of great prosperity in the XVIII century, a time when foreign and Portuguese artisans, merchants and businessmen were establishing themselves in the houses and warehouses of this area.
Port, or "fine wine", as it is popularly known, is its greatest prize and emblem, tucked away in the cellars of the Historic Centre, where it acquires a new taste, quality and prolonged lifespan.
Full of objects of interest, the Historic Centre of Vila Nova de Gaia today offers a mixture of sensations that vary between the splendour of its historic monuments and the modernity of its public spaces.
There are many monuments to enjoy, including the Monastery of the Serra do Pilar, the Luiz I bridge, the Port cellars, the church of Santa Marinha and the monastery of Corpus Christi as well as many excellent and modern public spaces, such as those along the riverfront, alongside which can be seen the barcos rabelos, the embarkation point for cruises along the river, and the Cais de Gaia (Gaia Quay), a special place where restaurants, bars, shops and performance areas are clustered together, offering the visitor a panoply of entertainment and interest.

Its design is the work of Engineer Théophile Seyrig, who had already worked with Eiffel on the construction of the Maria Pia bridge. Its structure, a type of filigree work in iron, supports two levels, united by an arch. It has recently been adapted in order to allow the metro to run on the upper level, whilst the lower level remains open to vehicular transport. Crossing the bridge on foot is an unforgettable experience.
