Santuário de Fátima

The Sanctuary of Fátima, located approximately 140 km North of Lisbon, is the most important shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Portugal. Every year, the Sanctuary attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.

Many good and not so good things have been said about the Sanctuary of Fátima but, in spite of my own ideas, it is not the purpose of this posting to discuss them here.

For all those interested in this matter, a very interesting summary can be found here.

The main posting is a view of the old basilica taken from the huge cross near the new church, which was open in October 13th, 2007 and can be seen here, thanks to José Pires (stego). The day I visited the sanctuary the weather conditions were simply terrible with quite heavy rain at times but it did not stop me of checking the place where the Catholic Church spent a mere sum of 70 million Euros just to build a church!

The WS is a view of the only thing I really like in the new church, which is the huge mosaic behind the altar.

The cross is very high and unusual. The placement of the subject is very effective and allow us to see the church in the distant background. The black and white colours are very good for this image as the give more character to the view. Good perspective of this place and time. Thanks Antonio.

Realmente as tuas férias foram de certo modo prejudicadas pelo tempo.E os nossos belos céus azuis foram difíceis de captar.Nesse sentido a opção polo p&b resultou muito bem e especialmente neste caso em que acho uma bela composição.Forte e com sentimento....Bom PDV.

Ciao Antonio,
you shot the feeling I also had about Fatima: anguishing!
The cross in the foreground dominate the composition and seems to repeat itself in the smaller trees, giving the gloomy athmosphere the grey light suggest.
The B&W is a great idea.

it's divine...truly, I think that sometimes bad weather makes for wonderful moods and lights with a bit of luck and perseverance like you had. I like very much the composition giving the importance to the cross standing out against the dramatic sky and I like its modern, minimalistic look too. The man more important than the church in the background...yes, that pleases me (my intepretation of course).

Hi Antonio,
The choice of B&W makes sense with the overcast sky and as it also increases the atmosphere of of that place.
The statue is actually nicely stylized because if I remember Jose's posts the new sanctuary looks a bit out of place, is it?

the story of fatima has always attracted me a lot... (may be because my grandma's name was fatima!...) i like the gothic mood in this shot antonio... it is dark, yet has enough light to give "hope"... impressive one, congrats...

Bem dramatica esta tua foto o ceu ficou magnifico com as nuvens , o santuario tava deserto devido a chuva , gostei assim com pouca gente , tenho umas foto com essa cruz nova o meu ceu tá azul , foi uma otima escolha pelo preto e branco , parabéns!!!

ei tratamiento en B/N da un mayor dramatismo y quizás misticismo a esta imagen, teniendo en cuenta el lugar donde has tomado esta foto. Hay una gran perspectiva en la composición, y un buen grafismo gracias al moderno crucifijo en primer plano, y a los pequeños árboles de la explanada que nos llevan la mirada hasta el Santuario, al fondo.

An image is especially well suited for the rapprochement of the Week Staff, with a white and black very well treated, and appropriate management of the light.

I like the cross stands as within the frame, which notes that it is of major proportions.

Well done Antonio, the black and white form of this photo was a wise conversion - it very much helps to accentuate the mood and message. It feels quite somber, as if there were actually someone (Jesus or otherwise) on that cross. I like how the human form is represented artistically. There is good balance in this photo - the dark trees are counteracted by the building to the left, the tall cross by the tall basilica in the distance which determines the depth. The photo is sharp, without jpeg artifacts and shows good planning and insight. Alignment is good. The strong tonal contrasts complete the image. Have a good week.

A silhueta da cruz, este céu carregado e a obvia escolha do P&B (obvia porque esta foto só funciona assim na minha opinião) fazem desta foto uma daquelas carregadas de mistica.
E mistica é o que não falta a Fátima e tu soubeste aproveitar bem este facto para criar uma bela foto.
Esta foto lembra-me uma daquelas cenas dos epicos em que Cristo está já na cruz e o tempo se assemelha muito ao que captaste nesse dia.

sempre quando eu tiro uma foto em uma cena com céu carregado, imagino a versão p&b. Não porque em cores, não ficaria bonito, mas porque creio que céus carregados funcionem muito bem em p&b. Sua imagem é bem impactante e usa bem essa característica. Bela composição para um dia chuvoso. Gostei bastante!

good Pciture, looks grate in B&P, I saw alal the workshops and brigs to my mind when I was there, I was so disspointed becuse I thoug this church will be amazing because all Portugal is Amazing and this church looks relative new and very simple, I was there in 2006 bofer the new basilic, however I think you made a nice work because you make this more bosuty giving your personal touch and this is important

the B&W with the high contrast is almost a classic one in its presentation. My only concern is that it might be a little bit to dark, but that could be just due to my screen. The composition works perfectly and with the additional links provided it gives a very good and educative roundabout of Fatima.

é uma vista belíssima, é um daqueles azares que acabam em sorte quando nos deparamos com um temporal que atrapalha o passeio mas que no fim acaba nos rendendo uma foto dramática e magnífica como esta. Lindíssima compo. Gostei muito. Apreciei também as outras fotos mostrando a igreja nova, quando fui pela última vez lá em 2001 não havia nada. Quem sabe ano que vem eu volto para ver este local.E pensar que minhas avós iam até aí a pé desde o começo..

Olá António, andei perdido na tua galeria e encontrei este post que ainda não tinha comentado e que é uma fantástica foto, muito bem apresentada neste dramático p&b. Eu nem gosto muito deste novo crucifixo, mas esta silhueta tem intensidade e dá para sentir bem a sua grandeza elevando-se bem alto no céu. Curiosamente, estive aqui pela 1ªvez há pouco tempo portanto isto sabe-me a fresco também ;-)
Está bem bonita, com a velha igreja lá atrás e a luz no chão molhado.
