Cathedral of Guarda

The mediaeval Catedral da Guarda (also known as Sé da Guarda) is the main attraction of the city of Guarda, in Northeastern Portugal. Its construction took from 1390 until the mid 16th century, combining Gothic and Manueline styles.

Guarda occupies a much boasted elevated position not far from the Spanish border at 1,056 metres (3,465 feet). Guarda is often described as Portugal's highest city and you can certainly feel a nip in the air as you climb ever upwards towards the centre. Although considered a city, and it does have an impressive cathedral, the old town is a welcoming place around which it is easy to find your way around. It is popular with weekenders and during the holiday season and is an excellent base from which to explore the less touristy north eastern part of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.
The square around the cathedral, Praca Luis de Camoes, has several 16th-18th century mansions dotted around it with striking granite decorations and galleries with painted details on the walls. There isn't much left of Guarda's 13th century castle other than the keep, Torre de Menagem on the hilltop above the cathedral (not open to the public). A remnant from the old town walls is the Torre dos Ferreiros, the Blacksmith's tower, and the gates Porta D'El Rei and Porta da Erva. Just down the hill not far from Torre dos Ferreiros is the 17th century Igreja da Misericordia church decorated in classic northern Portugal Renaissance style with whitewashed walls and granite details around the windows, doors and trims. The coat of arms of king Joao V is above the entrance and it is thought he ordered the building of the church. Inside the Baroque altars and pulpits are of interest.

I wonder if this is a castle! But your title says cathedral and so the architecture is really quite unique to see, even the color tone and texture of the wall is specially stylish.

A good POV with very good color contrast to the blue sky from your CPL effect, given the bright light for this capture.

Hello Filipe, I've never been to the north-eastern part of the country, including Guarda and Serra da Estrela. I don't really know what I missed but this kind of Manueline-styled monuments are really well-worth to see. The contrast of the Catedral against the cloudy blue sky looks beautiful but it would even look much better if you didn't zoom too much, just to allow us to see other elements in the environment.

Excelente apresentação da catedral. É curioso que tenhas escolhido uma vista lateral. Gosto muito da luminosidade, cores e nitidez, mas parece-me que tem uma muito ligeira dominante amarela esverdeada, que não me incomoda nada.

This is an interesting cathedral that looks more like a fortress. The people add a nice sense of scale for the cathedral. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.

portugal possui inúmeras igrejas e catedrais magníficas, ams eu aprecio muito esta aqui, ao estar lá é como que entrar numa máquina do tempo. gosto muito da simplicidade e do despojamento de sua bela arquitetura. aqui a sua imagem mostra bem a simplicidade das linhas da catedral, gostei da luz e do enquadramento

The presence of the persons has an effect of scale. The trees and the lampost are framing the cathedral. The point of view is showing with precision the details and colors of the architecture of the cathedral og Guarda. The nice blue sky is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.
