Photographer’s Note

"The Salt-pan of Figueira da Foz lie at the estuary of the river Mondego, being divided by the arm of the river and the southern island of Morraceira.
The type of salt of Figueira is small units with a large number of compartments, connected by an intricate network of canals.
For a long time they Salinas was a major economic activities of Figueira, now its historical and cultural legacy.
A characteristic aspect of salted of Figueira da Foz is the existence of the typical stores of salt, wooden buildings, based on a platform with a capacity to store between 150 to 200 tonnes of salt but also on the basis of salineiros (marnoteiros or marnotos). Today some are in ruins.
To preserve this important heritage was created in Salinas of Figueira da Foz a museum, a walking tour of three kilometres and a tour of tourist boat. These three options allow more knowledge about this practice as old, who characterized the landscape of Figueira for many years and which today is either retained."
