Land of great charm and beauty, was inhabited since ancient times of great importance in part by the exploitation of gold that was done along the river Alva.

References to the past are dated only from the nineteenth century. However, the castle which once existed there goes back at least to the time of D. Teresa, when the mother of the first king of Portugal confirmed the donation to the bishop of Coimbra in exchange for the Castle of Santa Eulalia.

In the struggle between D. Sancho and brother, the earl of Bologna, the castle was devastated and many oppressions suffered the residents of the region that the town was almost deserted.

But the town of Coja recovered charm. The beautiful farm houses and manors where noble families still inhabit the region has also led the population to adopt again. Miguel, the Chapel of St. Anthony, Chapel of the Lord's Tomb, near the river on the way to Camping, Chapel of the House of the Prior Costa and Pelourinho Manueline located in the town's main square.
