Guimarăes is a city of Portugal, located in the region of Braga, in the region of the North. It is the county seat of a municipality of 241,05 km2 and 158 124 inhabitants (2011). Guimarăes is a historical city which played a role mattering in the training of Portugal. His historical centre is inscribed since 2001 on the list of the worldwide heritage of the UNESCO. In 2012 the city has the title of Capital European of Culture. In 840, Alphonse VI de León organizes bishops' council there.
The monastery and the castle were constructed in XIth century.
In 1095, the count Henry de Portugal, father of Alphonse Ier, installs in it his courtyard, what makes that Alphonse Ier proclaims the kingdom of Portugal there.
Guimarăes will remain the capital of the county then the kingdom of Portugal until 1260, year of the transfer of the courtyard in Lisbon, after the accomplishment of the Reconquest in 1252.
