Countess Mumadona Dias has built a fortress in the tenth century to defend the village. Around this castle, the medieval city of Guimarães was formed.
The castle's history is closely linked to that of the founding of the Portuguese Nation. Tradition says that the parents of the first king of Portugal have established their residence and their son, Dom Afonso Henriques, was born here.
The Champ de São Mamede, behind the castle, is frequently referred to as a possible local to the famous Battle of São Mamede, fought June 24, 1128.
