Photographer’s Note

What we see is several "chestnuts" or castanhas growing in a tree in my backyard. The inner part of them the nut are called "castanha" - the portuguese chestnut.

The chestnut is a fruit of the "castanheiro", the portuguese chestnut tree. It's a tree of great dimensions, very abundant in the interior North and Center of Portugal, whose fruit, the chestnut, was the base of the feeding in Portugal until the o century XVII. In the South it is extremely rare, only appearing in raised areas. The castanheiro also produces wood of excellent quality, the chestnut-wood. Since remote times that are known in the Iberian Peninsula. Today, the chestnut is a symbol on to the commemorations of S.Martinho popular day, being consumed during the Autumn, normally baked or cooked. This fruit still is an important Portuguese agricultural exportation.
