An emblematic military work of the medieval Portuguese architecture, the Castle of St. Mary of Feira is one the monuments that best reflects the diversity of the defence resources used in the Middle Ages, having performed a fundamental role in the whole process of reconquest and autonomy of the Condado Portucalense (the County of Portucal).

Tradition claims that the Castle rises on the place where a native temple dedicated to the god Bandeveluco-Toiraeco was located. From 1117, one of the most important fairs in Portugal took place here that, in time, gave its name to the borough that was installed close to the Castle. After 1448, the Castle became the property of the nobleman Fernão Pereira that ordered some repair and reconstruction works, turning it into a lordly residence. The important works that granted its architectural character occurred in the late-15th century (with adaptations to the new ballistics needs) as well as the donjon, dominating the fortress, topped with its conic summits and tenaille, as a defensive reinforcement innovation. Another smaller tower, on the east side, forms a well and has a spiral elegant stairway.
