Photographer’s Note

Located in the municipality of Ílhavo, parishe of Gafanha da Nazaré and district of Aveiro, Aveiro's lighthouse is the highest in Portugal and second highest in Europe. Built between 1885-1893, it was projected by a self made man who won against the other proposals. Its opening was in 1893 and made by Bernardino Machado, minister. In this same year, besides the light beam signals, a sonorous signal started functioning.

Initially, the main light source was obtained from petrol. Only in 1950 the lighting system was power with electrical public energy, being installed a lamp of 3000W, that was after replaced by a 1000W one. In 1990 it was automatized working now with less human intervention.

The stairs are composed by two sectors: the first with 271 steps with a snail shape and it's made of stone and the second sector is of only 20 steps and made out of metal.

It's 62 meters high, allowing it to light up to 23 nautical miles.
