Photographer's Note

Ponta de São Lourenço, Caniçal.

When you arrive from continental Europe by plane, the first view you have of Madeira is the Ponta de São Lourenço. It is characterized by an arid and rocky landscape, which contrasts with the green aspect of the rest of the island. In fact, the area has a specific flora, protected by a nature reserve.

This is the only place on the island where you can admire at the same time the north coast and the south coast. This feature and the landscape of volcanic rocks make it a very popular place to visit.
The south coast of the cape has one of rare sandy beaches of Madeira. This is natural, unlike that of Calheta.
