Photographer's Note

Southeast of Madeira, the Deserted Islands (Ilhas Desertas in Portuguese) is a small archipelago of three uninhabited islands. The three islands are aligned along a north-south axis, with, in order, the island Chão, Deserta Grande (both seen in the photo) and Bugio. Aridity and escarpment have prevented any permanent human settlement. Today, these islands are home to a rare species of tarantula and a colony of monk seals. The archipelago is a natural reserve since 1995.
