Photographer's Note

Funchal, Avenida Zarco.

After a day on the heights of Funchal, we did not expect such activity downtown. In front of the cathedral, a “snake” of fresh cut flowers goes from street to street. About half a mile (at first glance), floral compositions keep coming. People from different parts of Funchal composed and arranged it in the afternoon with impressive dexterity and speed. Yes, six hours earlier, there was nothing, and no sign that a party was foreshadowed unfold. We decided to follow the sward until the crowd was on the sidewalks. The celebration begins ! A parade of scouts and different Madeiran parishes leaves no doubt that it is a religious holiday. All carefully avoid the flowerbed , placed in the middle of the street crossings . Only the bishop, who closed the procession, has the honor to walk on the snake of flowers.

As soon as the procession ended, the audience rushed to pick the flowers still in good condition. The technical services of the city were quick to clean the street. And just minutes after the end of the festival, Funchal was cleared of all these flowers. As if nothing had happened.

Another view of flowerbed and cleaning in WS.
