Recently a fellow Trekearth memeber described the weather in Sao Miguel Azores as Vivaldi's 'The four Seasons' in one a day. Thank you Fernando . This was such a day, every few minutes it was a new weather surprise (we had rain, drizzle, humidity, subshine, wind, a rainbow, and a couple thunder claps- all within a 5 mile area in a period of 2 hours). We had gone to visit a group of small lakes called Lagoas Empadadas. These lakes have only received attention in last few years, and only recently have there been decent roads to drive to see them. The area is beautiful, with a dense canopy of trees. The ground is very soft because it's all moss about a meter deep. Sometimes during spring there are thousands of crayfish litterally crawling out of the lakes.
We had been exploring the area and I was taking a few photos, when my husband came with the idea for this composition. This is the walkway to the parking area. The steps were interesting and I have a few shots of this without a human; but I like this much better. The violation part being that the human is my husband, but I'll take my chances by posting it.
It was difficult to deal with this day becase there was so much mist in the air that everything was a little soft and slightly out of focus.
I thought about cropping the white foggy and misty sky but then i didn't like the photo as much.
The photo was contrast adjusted, cropped and saved for the web. Cloned out white cane.

Loved your idea of putting a human being inside your frame, since I learnt this trick from my Guru a few days back while on a trip with him. We feel the nature shots are killed when you put someone in, but sometimes it plays well as in this shot. Without the human object the photo will miss something and you won't be satisfied.
Thanks for the confession but I loved the steps which are taking the viewer to someplace else with the human object.

Hello, Cristina! I like Your composition very much. I thought the same as Kausik - sometimes inserting a human i the ladscape picture damages it, but in this situation everything is o.k. Good DOF and perspective....

Great compo and nice DOF - As we say in french "le personnage est la cerise sur le gateau" "the human is the cherry on the cake" -

My surprise is in mouvement and wait is like possible a cinema shot. I will wait for "Empadadas" and with similar weather and cold scenery. So it will be not a great suprise for us but a great for all. I will expect your next paths in this great work you are doing to me, to Portugal and our TE international fellows.
The best to you, to your friendly hints and your heart!
Congratulations and I will expect a good one from you and by my side a altenative way.

I do not think that it is about a violation of the TOS since this image does not seem a photograph of family. The composition is tallied perfectly, the back-light is perfect with this soft luminosity.

Hi Cristina! Very nice. I like the depth you show with the fog in the background. The weather pattern sounds like a place I know in Alaska. Nice colours. I always question myself about putting a single person in my nature shots. Sometime it works, sometimes not. Yours works great. Thanks!

Nice composition Cristina. The mist makes the image more mysterious and unique. The fresh green brings life to the picture.
weswang (18223) 2005-05-31 10:45
Hi Cristina, A very moody environment under the mist. The clarity is fading with the distance. A very well taken picture with very nice contrast and sharpness. The inclusion of the person in the picture adds some imaginations to the picture. Well done.

A real nice one Cristina. The lady looks so much as an must element in this composition. Now i cannot think this shot without the lady in itself.Thats for showing us the weather with w diferent way.nice one really.

A fine view of this interesting place - I like the hazy look and reflections on the lock / staircase. Yes I remember seeing your husband before - thanks for this fine job and your new intro as well.

Nice place C. and you sure had the best weather condition for the capture. And I think you are right that a person is good to have in the compo, placed as here.
Well for the TOS... I cross my fingers for you..

Rules exist to be broken! Then new rules have o made (to be broken again), that'e why the world had developed...
Excelente photo, nice graphism and mood.

Well at least you came straight out with the "violation". :) The image though is great. It really helps that you put him in it. It adds a good focal point and a nice human touch. I like that you left the white at the top. It adds an added feel for the day. Although cropping also creates a nice feel, almost jungle like by creating a dense looking forest. But I prefer it with the opening and giving a bit more of the surroundings. Nicely done.

Hi Cristina,Really beautiful capture,i love the timber steps and the moss on the trees look great. well done ,Dave.

A beautiful portrait of your husband, Cristina. I sort of wish you had left in the cane as I know he is blind. It's a pity he couldn't see the incredible beauty he was walking in, but I know he could sense the stillness and peacefulness.
vesalius (861) 2005-06-09 14:22
Spectacular shot. I agree completely in adding people into the shot. It gives the shot balance.

:) it is almost funny that you put right there on the title that this is a violation. But it isn't because it was never intended to be a photo for the family album: your husband blowing his birthday candles, or you 2 smiling to the camera in front of a historic monument...
what i like most in this photo is the misterious atmosphere, the forest / fog / mist / the steps taking us there...
walktowilli (168) 2005-06-17 2:38
Cristina, I like this with the subject. It puts nature and human together and creates a wholesome shot. I like the fog in the background.
john_c (24666) 2005-06-18 0:29
Hi Cristina. What a moving shot, full of ambience and mystery. The rich textured colours of the stairs are very pleasing, as are the greens of the forest. I believe that although a technical violation, the spirit of the TE rule about relatives was not broken, because I think the rule is there so as not to make the person the focal point of the shot; incidental or minor enhancement is okay...Great shot, Cristina.
kevinos (7403) 2005-06-18 5:07
I find this a most interesting and satisfying composition. The figure, walking into the scene seems to be in just the right place to act as a focal point and give scale. The light is soft, creating a lovely atmosphers. regards kevin
jafadabret (56501) 2005-06-20 2:26
carper (96) 2005-06-27 11:23
yes I lik this one Cristina,
well composed shot, great depth in it, and I like the good depth in it, the note is very nice too Cristina, very good job,

AS soon as I saw this photo as a thumbnail I knew I liked it Cristina. The composition, your POV, the colours and the mist are all so good. And your husband it standing at just the right place too. Very well done, excellent!
Polonaise (5802) 2006-03-19 18:10
Funny thing I've observed with this beautiful photo of yours.
The place is great. The weather to dream of. The soft lights. The shades of greens. The stairs !!! One thing was missing. The human element. And guess what, Cristina?
This human element almost steals the show. Now , we are watching that great pony tail of her instead of the scenery.
But - all together is just one marvelous photography.
Two thumbs up.

I was looking for your guitar player and I found this lovely photo. Your loving words made me see this man as having a lovely spirit and now I see he also has a lovely body to match; lucky you :-). I also enjoyed this series because you were engaged in a loving interchange with Fernando.
As to the picture, it really does require a person to complete the compo. The broad log steps bounded by the forest green shrubs and mossy trees, cry out for a person. I also like the way the green fades into the foggy mist giving one the real feel of being there.
