This charming little church is on top of a hill and overlooks Ponta Delgada.
This church is actually built on the site of the original (which was built in 1547. The old decript chuch was torn down i914 and rebuilt using some of the original in 1925. The black stone is basalt and it was hand carve. Basalt is present in most of the island's construction. There is a line in a song that says 'e nas veias corre me basalto negro' translates to ' in my veins courses the darkened basalt.
The church was incorporated in the parish of Sao Pedro in Ponta delgada in the 1940's. Below the chapel there is a garden. And at the base of the hill there is a dwelling dug into the hill where the caretakers lived for years. From this vantage point there are beautiful panoramas of the city and port.
I know compositionally and framing wise this could be better. It is difficult to find an angle that shows the facade because there is only limited spaces to go before running out of hill to stand on. There are also many trees that tend to get in the way.

Inside the chapel is decorated with fishing motif and it was also called Our Lady of the Fisherman. It sits a little less than 50 people inside. This church is mainly used for funerals of fisherman and also of children. Sometimes weddings also take place here. The chapel is not open on a regular basis. The window of my childhood bedroom faced this church.

In the workshop there is an The horrible photo but it shows this chapell in relation to the city. This church is also very close to The Scream and to Fernando 's New Ponta Delgada at S.Miguel - Azores.

Bonjour Cristina,

Celso

Cristina,
I love to explore chapels and churches when I am on vacation. This has to be one of the most beautiful I have seen. The black and white facade is very ornamental and, for some reason, reminds me of some of the haute coutour wedding dresses that have featured black lace on white recently. I love it. Well done again!

Hi Cristina. That's really impressive you got those results with so little post-processing. I like the pov and dark blues of the sky. It almost looks like you had a polarizer. Thanks for the good note too. Nicely done Cristina!

Very nice photo! Everything is so clear- the blue sky with the clouds, and the black details on the church. It looks like a very small church in the shot, but a very lovely one. Great picture!

Thanks

Hi Cristina, After reading your note, I think I got understand of the meaning behind the title of this picture. A church with special meaning. This is a very well taken picture with nice contrast and sharpness. The blue sky makes a very nice background contrast with the outline of the building. Well done.

Hi Cristina,
Excellent contrasting colours on the church. I think the best part of the picture is that the sharp colours of the roof of the church contrasts superbly with the clear blue sky. Nice strong colours on this one. Well taken

Ola Cristina,

Hi Cristina, looks very familiar, such a facade. In Paraty, Brazil I have seen them of course, as there were many reminders of the glorious past of the Portuguese people. (I'm NOT talking about mills now ;-)).
I understand that it's hard to move around and get the whole church on it, but I think you did very well. It's a very nice facade too, with the dark stone contrasting with the white wall.
OK, the WS picture is horrible, but gives a good idea of the place.

beautiful church, nicely captured
the angle, sharpness, details and blue sky, all are marvelous
very well done, cristina

Hi Cristina - beautifully ornate architecture, I like the contrast of the black basalt against white, and despite this stark colour difference, the façade is perfectly exposed, with fine details on basalt, and the white is not burnt out.

Excelente trabalho...
Beto Grein

Boa tarde Cristina, you captured this church from a very good angle and I love the strong contrast between black, white and blue. The architecture of this fine church really speaks due to this. Parabens!
Regards from Rotterdam, Bert.

Hi Christina! Beautiful small church, indeed! The black/dark and white colors are quite unusual for a church :) The blue sky and scattered clouds are lovely! Very smooth shot! rgds.

Good work c. You choosed the optimal combination of light and colours with the clouded blue sky as a perfect background for this white building with the black ornaments and stones. A fine presentation, maybe a bit too tight cropped, some more 'air' around the chapel could have worked too.

Hi Cristina,
What a marvellous composition, portraying this church in all its glory. Your note is interesting, including the fact that your childhood bedroom faced the church. The lighting and contrast are superb and the photo is well cropped. Best wishes as always...
John

Very neat and clear picture, Cristina. The whites are luminous and ... white ! A very accurate exposure.
I was impressed by Brasilian churches. I found them so clear and proud, now I see it's inherited from Portugal. Funny how the Germans in Brazil adopted the style, building proud white cathedrals in their small colonies.

Lovely church, Cristina.
I like the contrast of black and white against the blue sky, and these green painted doors forming a triangle with the loan and tree branches.
Thanks for posting a WS photo for the scale and sense of position.

PS. Very useful note!

Hi Cristina,

Wonderful shot from one of the Portugues Paradises (Azores Islands). This church has a very typical architecture style from those islands (black basalt and white walls). Love the contrast between the church and the blue sky. Full of sharpeness and details.
Well done.
Fred

Nice capture. The play between dark stone and white stucco is neat. It creates a real bold outline and makes it look like a drawing placed on this landscape. That is partly because it stands quite apart from the green I see around it and the blue of the sky. It's really a bold little structure. Maybe if you were able to get a wider view, farther back perhaps, it might have added to the scene by giving it some space and a better idea of its surroundings. But still it's a nice capture of quite a bold but somehow quiet structure.

Like the way the white stands out against the blue sky. Did you do any Post processing?

Indeed very charming this church Christina, you captured it with full bright sunny colors and a good perspective view, I like you chosed a standing frame for it, excellent !

This is a great architectural shot, Cristina. I like how the bright blue sky contrasts with the 'black and white' church. Your point of view makes the tower and cross more impressive. Thank you for adding the workshop. It is interesting to see the location of the church.

hi Cristina,
this is a nice photo of this lovely church with this original architecture parts.
nice shot!

Hi Cristina!

This is a nice and unusual chapel! I don't recall many churches built with black stones, and these black stones (Basalt?) are gorgeous as black marble. And the pure white walls are a great contrast. This is a real "Oreo" Church (forgive me if I sound unrespectful on that) and it seems almost extracted from a fairy tale.

I guess I'll like a little more of the surroundings to be seen, but as you note, maybe that wasn't possible.

Well seen!
