Ponta Delgada is the largest town on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores. The population is about 60,000 and it is the administrative capital of the Azorean archipelego. The island has been inhabited since 1444 and it was in the 19th century the economy grew with exports such as citrus fruits. While walking across the beautiful volcanic landscape it is impossible to miss the importance of dairy cattle to the economy.
The back street in the picture was close to our modern, Japanese influenced hotel and the contrast in architectral styles was very noticable. The street had seen better times but I liked the bright colours against the more muted and decaying walls.

A street which is "right up my street", this one!
The light is divine and has brought out all the lovely textures and colours of the variegated walls and roof tiles perfectly. The contrasts between the old decaying and rough walls and the brightly painted yellow and white building - as well as the bright road sign and litter bin - are striking and delightful. Your composition is excellent with all elements pleasingly arranged within the frame and the "no entry" sign anchoring the whole composition perfectly.
Lovely light and colours, perfect composition and exquisite details and sharpness which, of course, are shown to best advantage in the "beta" version of TE.
An interesting and informative note too.

Hello Ann ,
This is here the typical portuguese architecture . It is a pitty that locals often prefer to build new houses , instead of renovate the ancient ones .
Many deyails and textures to look at .

did you say Japanese style Hotel? now that is cool and very weird at the same time considering your're staying on an Island off of Portugal!!!
love the shot, its right up my alley, pardon the pun.
I notice the building on the right is totally inacessible with the bricked-up windows - thats cool too.
I like the rustic nature of the buildings and the grass growing out of some of them, glad you got the red rusted rooftop colors too.

You continue to educate me, Ann. THANKS!
I would have looked at this scene and sought a POV that eliminated the traffic sign, rubbish bin, and electrical box. But you have integrated them very artfully! I especially like the interplay between the sign (that's international "no entry," right?) and the whimsy of the bricked-over windows in the front house!
Have a GREAT weekend!

So you finished with Route 66? Nice shot from your new trip. Nice old street, picturesque with the grass on the roofs. Funny contrast of the old walls of abandoned house and the new bin and electricity box.
have a beautiful weekend

Hi dear Ann
Another stuuning and tasteful town image via so natsural and casual appraoch. Normal lens appraoch makes so fantatsic and sharp / clear image as such. Conratulation on your supper job!
Thanks a lot and have a good weekend! Takero

Hello Ann - This is a lovely shot. What attracts me, apart from the excellent composition and superb textural detail on the walls, is the colour. I just love the red No Entry sign and the green litter bin. I think they work so well balancing the crisp yellow and white of the neatly painted facade. Top class management and a shot with super detail and interest. Warm regards Rosemary

I enjoy strolling in such weather-bitten, neglected streets. I always hope to find interesting and catchy details with strong colours, which is just what you did here. It's a very plain view and few would call it beautiful, but the green waste bin, the red and white sign and the yellow details on the house just down the street are the kind of details that make the view interesting. The nearest tiled roof may have seen better days but is still worth seeing. I also like the grey on grey pattern of the filled-in windows. The light is perfectly hanbdled.

The main parts of these building do not seem to be too well maintained but there are some very strong colours here that contrast against the quite ordinary colours of those walls. These parts really stand out and create strong accents in this picture. A fine observation.

Hello Ann. An interesting composition with strong colors. On one hand, old houses, on the other hand, modern image elements, such as the electrical box. Good technical quality.
ChrisJ (91290) 2013-09-01 1:31
Good sharpness with effective tight framing and excellent warm vs cold colour contrasts between the blue sky and red roof tiles. Superb shadow detail and perspective has been well managed. I like the textural details on the old crumbling wall too. Tfs!

I like this study of a street. It seems that someone has placed the different elements there just for you to come along and photograph. You have a found a nice mellow light and colours that are dotted about in just the right places for a satisfying composition. It has a sharpness that allows us to enjoy the variety of textures.
