A touching photo, my friend, George. As I am to be a grandmother again, it is one that - gives me memories of the other two times. When the nurse (maybe like the one in your photo) kicked a stool at me and ordered me to have a seat. :)) I like the side lighting in this and I, too, am given pause by the furrows in that nurse's brow. Well done in black and white and thanks to all of you or we'd none be moms. All the best,
Shelly

Hi George,
Absolute great shot. Almost 30 years old, man what a quality after all those years. Taken with a Practica, i can't hardly believe it. I also had such a thing, later replaced by the so called sophisticated B200...a real laugh ;-)
But see here what the old TL has made...man deep respect for that. This is so extremly good for such a camera. Or it it the Carl Zeis, that could explain a lot, because the image quality is very high.
The way the nurse looks to the left, probably on a monitor see how the baby lies. The light in her face, her bright eyes, beautiful black hair, the cap on her head...it all fits perfectly.
This looks like a scene from a film...maybe made by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, such a typical late 70s film.
Oh man i really like this one...thanks...it's perfect..!!!
Regards, Henk

Interesting one, George.
I believe that the baby have turned
27 this very spring and would be out
of themselves to see this capture!
I like the triange betwen the mother's
and nurse's head and the belly, and the
contrast between mother's closed eyes and
nurse's gaze towards the light.
Well done!

Wow, she (the nurse) is seeing the light of a new life while the mother looks more feeling the pain of giving life. We can see that 27 years is a long time because the nurse is wearing a typical cap (I have not seen that for quite a long time here in Australia) and the walls of that room are quite unusual in today’s hospitals. The WS is wonderful.
It really is a great homage to all mothers.

I read the beautiful poetry of a 16/17 year old girl whilst working in a prison last week - talking of her baby on the outside and writing beautifully about this child from conception to birth - amazing - and when we think of the experiences - the conceptions, the carrying, the sometimes losing, the birth, the feeding, changing, symbiotic physicality, letting others into this relationship, the trials and troubles alongside the joys of growth and then letting go but never letting go.......what stories unfold from this most profound of images - the almost angelic light on the nurse and her all too human expression are extra-ordinary.........men....a good and present father.....is the first significant external relationship a child has out of that symbiosis with their mother - if she is the true teacher of the body - how to be in it and nourish it - it is the father who teaches the heart and relationship ......how sad we distort this relationship out of recognition in our societies and reduce men so often to being less than half a human being.......
...see now what you have done you giant of a dwarf......I was going to bed.....it's tomorrow morning already...and you get me thinking like this with your picture of a hand on a bump full of joys to come!

Hi George,
A very interesting image!
I like very much the light and illumination on the face of the nurse, a very dramatic one.
Very good also the action of the scene, and the fact that is a woman who is helping another woman to give birth.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

What strike me in the first place in looking at this very touching (again!) photo, it is the light in the belly. And no, it is not my so usual English mistake, of mixing "on" and "in". No. This time, I am consciously using the in.
There is so much beauty in this photo George. So much beauty... The look of concern of the nurse, the close eyes of the mother, the hand on the belly, and that little thing there: the light illuminating the belly...
------------------------------------
I think the WS should receive proper attention too. I am melting in looking at the incredible gentleness and softness in the eyes of this new mother. And again, the light... the light! Why, oh why does I have suddenly a lump in my throat?...
And your notes, the one in the WS especially, are praiseworthy.
--------------------------------------
But you are wrong George. It takes a father. I am the one to know that more than any other...

wielki respect, bracie, wielki respekt...

Dear Mr. Grabarczyk,
You dream on artificial impregnating of women, so why don't you dream on artificial wombs stuffed in men? This is so unfair. If men wanted (and supported with hightech) they could give birth too. Ehmmm, would i like it? Of course not, but give a chance to absurd dreaming...
Your photo is striking. Taken in 1980, i wonder whose birth it is. And i am worried about the expression of the nurse. Is it something wrong going on? And what were you doing there with your low POV, in that special moment? Do i have the rights to ask those questions, or shall i just shut up?

Let me tell you George that this "main" post is nothing but good both in terms of literacy, photography and care mother dedication. But the ws belongs to an higher level of "things". It's a pity we can't favorite workshops because I would favorite this one. You were true (and still are...). How can a woman look more beautiful than here? Those eyes, the restful expression, the feeling of quietude... Looks that she's swimming in a giant lake of happiness. What a great photography that this is.

I already said that I liked much this photograph as I like all your photographs of this hospital…
It joins both all the code of practice and the emotion. The emotion is seen here more on the face of the midwife, worried... waiting...that on that of the mother wich rest in the shade…
There, it is mother by her belly….and one cannot not see it.
I like very much the way in which you have worked out this photograph in PP: the play of the light and the shadow emphasizes what it is necessary to emphasize, and hide what it is necessary to hide (the white tiling);).
You had the occasion to make rare photographs with Akademia Medyczna, the photographs that everyone does not have the occasion to make… unless being father who is waiting for the childbirth, and the hand of the father could tremble in this moment.
And you did it perfectly. Because the occasion is not enough: I am convinced that the majority among us could not as well make.
You chose the good moment to present that one….
A pearl on TE.
PS : Mam nadzieje, ze zrozumiales moje angielskie wypociny...
Sciskam i love Cie. Grazyna.

Again, George!!! How many surprises do have for us? How many more beauties do you have? Incredible lighting. She is seeing it. She is feeling it - the miracle of life is out there and is arriving. And you were there and got those moments. You have the sensibility to capture such magic moments. The WS? Outstanding! Why these photos aren't out there in the real world, so everybody can see them?

Hi George...
I first noticed your photos here on TE with your other shots from the hospital. I just love them, and these two are excellent additions to the series...
I just love this issue of childbirth, motherhood, it's the ultimate poetry to me.

Thanks for sharing these hospital photos... they're important...

Witaj Jurciu!
Olá Jorge!
In Portuguese, when a baby is born we say that the mother "gave to the light".
Here in your photo I see this mother is ready to give to the light, the wonderful light that is entering that dark (?) room.

George, this is what I came for...THe lighting, man, you just got that light SO RIGHT with the RIGHT timing! That's the ever elusive combination, the tricky light, the change of subjects, the movement in space and the ever changing composition that makes photography so beautiful and demanding...
A great portrait of the nurse, her gaze lightened by the ray of light, the trusting patient, the assuring press of a hand...so HUMAN!
Well done, well done!! A FAV!

What a wonderful composition you have here.
I like particularly the nurse's expression. Her face looking to the light, expresses hope and and weary expectation.
The hands are also very expressive.
Well done!
As for the note, well I agree with you on the fact that women are prepared physically as well as psychologically and emotionally to nurture their children... and to care for everyone in the family! one only sees that when she's absent :)

Aahhhhhhhh, what a work, George... Rembrandt in bw!!! The baroque lighting as it falls on the midwife/doctor's face, the anticipation mixed with anxiety, the mother's tender "sleep" preceding the pain and rupture of birth, the actual GENTLENESS of all this, all these leave me befuddled, speachless, in awe...
into my favs, dear George.
