Jableczna is the place where one of the only two male Orthodox monasteries in Poland is located. It borders the river Bug, and some properties (old chappel) of the monastery are across the river, on the Belarussian side.
Monks turned out to be very open but on the other hand - they were most proud of themselves and the temple.
Everytime you say good bye to the Orthodox monks or priests you'll hear in reply "Please come back, you are very welcome".

What an imposing position. Your low POV makes us feel small in front of that monk and inside the church. Simply beautiful. And the WS is also excellent, showing us that master peace. The only little minus on the WS, you cropped the monks feet.

that priest looks so different on both pictures because of the perspective. The b+w perspective gives him so much authority.
AiresSantos (56155) 2006-09-10 4:00
Great perspective of this Orthodox monasteries in Poland. Very well chosen the b&W for this shot. Excellent definition.
TFS and greetings,

Its too bad we didnt go there in APril
Very amazing capture showing both the priest as well as the architecture,
great use of your technique
jinju (14265) 2006-09-10 5:14
one of your stringer efforts of late. A contextual portrait with a superb POV in a Francis style almost. But the b/w is not Francis at all.

Wow Jerzy, fantastic perspective on the subject!!He is into his environment...as a unique thing!!Beautiful the architecture ofthis Ortodox moasteries...i never seen one into..Great work Jerzy!

Gustaw (21670) 2006-09-10 9:25
Bez wątpienia ciekawe i odważne zdjęcie. Nietypowa pozycja do fotografowania. Największa zaleta tego zdjęcia to właśnie ta nietypowość.
PJE (20758) 2006-09-10 10:36
Jerzy I like this one and the photo of the high alter. I have never seen a religious place so elaborately decorated. I think this man though living in present Poland has roots deep in the past. I do like the circular dome above the altar. It adds so much to this frame as well as the priest's proud stance. You have captured him very well in his world. Looks like he belongs and live here. Good work.
And on a side note of perspective...the church I attend simply has four walls some seats to sit in and a simple platform with a pulpit for the preacher. Simple and uncluttered is how God wants us to approach Him. He does not care so much about our past as much as He simply wants an honest heart to approach Him in sincerity!

Pozdrowienia T.

Next time in Poland I'll rent a car, I'll put you inside and we'll go there... :P

This is amazing Jerzy! He really seems magnificent and that has turned this into a very strong photo. And your b&w choice even boosts that grandiose feeling. I like the way you have treated this with some reverence. One can really feel bending here. Dont know if a caring face looking at you wouldnt me more passionate. The way it is shows some uncomfortable highness. A great work, one of your best I am sure.

Hi Jerzy, an imposing portrait of the priest, nicely reflecting the male dominance described in your Note. The roof and windows provide perspective and the tonal range is good. My only small problem is with the reflection of the windows in the spectacles of the priest - but I'm being too fussy. Very nicely done. Stephen
designsoul (21492) 2006-09-10 14:02
It is really beautiful, Jerzy, but hohoho, the title, I would give it another title... it is an antithesis to Orthodoxy to dwell in pride, dear friend. They are humble yet perhaps proud of their monastery... which is truly beautiful. Love your bw conversion again, the immense clarity of the details... superb catch... but please, no pride...
Warm greetings from a colder climate,

Excellent composition with this pope..
Your framing is really good, you have a great perspective and the background is very rich.
Excellent B&W too.

Dobra robota.

"I Pac wart palaca, i palac Paca.".
I ten obiektyw szeroki...
Oh, yeah !!

Super fotka, naprawde bardzo mi sie podoba. Punkt widzenia i ujecie swietne. Notka tez fajna.
Pozdrawiam i zapraszam do siebie

great view to show the hugeness.
Impressive B/W work here.
Terrific set picturised.
coco (30439) 2006-09-11 5:43
POV and exposure, and also the black and white are good. But the scene is even good by itself.
Luko (14000) 2006-09-11 6:36
Priest : "Please come back you are very welcome"
Jerzy lying on the ground : "we are not worthy" (to himself "at least it was worth getting my face to his feet, I got the perfect POV") .
Yes, Jerzy, your point of view is quite remarkable. I can't help but imagine how you got that shot... probably, the most remarkable thing is that the priest doesn't seem to notice you're shooting at him, or maybe is he a good actor too.
Once in a while I do prefer Color to BW versions : I would have liked to see this one in low key color, because I can imagine the churchlike atmosphere, with natural lighting enlightening some parts of the place while keeping the whole into a soft darkness.
On the other hand, I've seen the color shots in your WS, and it seems that it's illuminated with quite ugly artificial light..
Furachan (0) 2006-09-11 7:02
That's just an awesome shot my friend, WOW! You play for keeps, eh? Great title, fuly illustrated through your extreme POV, a Picture of PRIDE!
Quite brilliant, Jerzy, you were loaded for bear on this one...
yanseiler (20) 2006-09-11 10:33
Hi Jerzy, this view is so cool, really like how you took it, the "contre-plongée" makes it so powerfull, I like the proudness of the priest and the good management of the exposure, very well done...
starbug (6924) 2006-09-11 10:51

super bardzo wow! very very cool shot, Jerzy, the low PoV and the composition.... man, this is something else... makes wish I could shoot something like this.
Vato_Law (12720) 2006-09-11 18:06
Impressice the expression of this priest and the view to the altar behind. Wonderful quality on this photo, well sharpened and contrasted. The B&W choice adds it strengh and mystic.
Homerhomer (4080) 2006-09-11 23:28
Beautifull photo, I am getting a feeling of discipline but not warmth, something perhaps dating back to previous centuries when religion was the law if you know what I mean. Great point of view, peasant infront of allmighty.
Clairedelune (4923) 2006-09-13 22:03
Oh my God! To tell you the truth, I am as much fascinated than afraid! Afraid? Because religion had (and still has?) so much power on people. And not always for the good, in my humble opinion. Religion has a tendency, sometimes, to IMPOSE its ideology, its moral on people. And judge what's right and what's wrong. And even, who is right and who is wrong. I don't know what you had to do in order to be so low and him, so high, but this guy seems to be very imposing... (I don't mean, that it was its attitude, since I was obviously not there!).
In another way, I am fascinated. Always been fascinated by spirituality. But also, for the very sophisticate and delicate design of their art. The intricate pattern of the design behind the priest is quite beautiful.
Tell me, is there any 'female' Orthodox monasteries in Poland?
(Very good photo!)
delnaja (2056) 2006-09-14 4:48
this is a real beauty... the POV, the b&w, the dynamism... everuthing is excellent.
Andrzej_HHH (2480) 2006-09-14 8:16
Pozdrawiam!
KevRyan (22956) 2006-09-14 15:42
Great work J - such a nice image - quite an extreme POV - such a range of light there - man you had one compliant priest there - a stunningly dynamic image of a still subject!
ALSOM (6616) 2006-09-19 7:25
The POV delivers a kind of greatness to this man, full of spritual power. I like the way to include the details in the background: the wall the roof. Brilliant composition.
Thanks, Alain -

I remember to see this spectacular one in a rush...Very good and funny critics here. I can't stop imagine your position on the floor to get this shot. He really looks a figure of authority, but also the monumental architecture is more impressive from this angle.
Very, very good!
dolin (15619) 2006-09-20 14:44
Zepi (22848) 2006-09-21 5:11
Ca déchire cette image!
Quelle force dans ce noir et blanc
J'adore cette prise de vue!!!
Merci pour le partage
t0mmm1 (5442) 2006-09-22 16:52
I think that this is really great. The low POV makes this man bigger than he is really and here I can really feel his strenght. This is wonderful use of wide angle lenses.
Have a nice weekend,
sergio1 (12152) 2006-10-02 3:27
Magnific b&w shot and grear angle shot. I love the compo and perspective.
The WS are nice too.
