The Catholic Church has a very strong position in Poland, being ever present in society and even in the streets.
I saw these priests hurrying to work in Warsaw while I was myself hurrying to my second mini TE meeting with Malgo (emka).
Is there any deep significance in the fact that the only woman is going in the opposite direction? Probably not.
Here is a larger version.

Hi Gert - I see we're neighbors today. This is a very different commute than what I'm used to here! As the strength of the Catholic Church seems to be ever fading in the US, it's instructive to remember how much cultural, political and even economic power it still retains in so much of the world. And I enjoyed the little push there at gender roles in the church - certainly a hot topic these days as Francis makes his mark!

En mycket intressant bild av det dagliga livet i Polen. Jag tror att bilden är mer intressant med den enda kvinnan vänd mot kameran och de många män vänd mot motsatt riktning.

Interesting observation. I know this place very well, I used to go to work like these priests, some meters further. And I do not remember so many of them at once:). But in fact Miodowa street is quite special. The nun after some meters will pass the Greek orthodox Uspienski Church and on the other side is the residence of Polish Primate and Academy of Christian Theology. On the other side of the street, there is one more church - in the chapel there is the heart of King John Sobieski.
Interesting composition and such nice memory of our meeting.

very informative note underlying your picture. Priests have still their long black dress in Poland, and they follow the house perspective to go to... work or to church?
ourania (47784) 2014-07-02 8:00
a spontaneous and effective composition of daily rhythmical patterns. The simplicity and eloquence of the scene are remarkable, I like very much how the frame is filled with this perspective and how well the movement is rendered. The architecture is austere but elegant, the priests stand out intriguingly and the nun offers a agreeable contrast with her walk in the opposite direction and because she is far less mysterious than the priests who look like silhouettes. Fine moody colours and very quiet atmosphere. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

So many priests at once, in Warsaw and in Vatican is this possible, excellent shot, you were at the right time in the right place :))

Hello dear Gert,
Interesting Daily life scenery from Warsaw.
This is absoulutely the way of catholic priests dailylife which can be seen only in Vatican and Poland; still a powerfull group of people, still mastering the spritual heritage.
The third one from left carries most probably a portable pc on his shoulder.
But the contrast you've underlined is great; the sister on the opposite direction.
TFS and best regards

This is a very fine photograph and very well seen and taken too. It's also quite amusing seeing all these priests hurrying down the street - in fact, there's seven of them - a bit like Snow White's seven dwarfs - I wonder if they were singing the "Hey, Ho..." song? And what also amuses me is the fact that the second priest from the left appears to be gazing through the railings at this restaurant - I hope he isn't about to yield to the temptation of a delicious meal there. And why is the nun walking in the opposite direction? And why does she seem so happy and content?
Lots of different questions to ask in this photograph! But also a very fine photograph too: well composed with all the elements pleasingly arranged throughout the frame and with excellent technical quality too.

Interesting shot from street.
Good reportage photo.

I just had to read Malgos critique of this photo.
and as usual Malgo shows her knowledge of the local area, knowing exactly thats around each corner :)
funny you should comment about the woman walking the other direction, i'm sure its just a coincedence.
the only thing looking to be a little out of place is that sign - doesn't seem to belong there. Looks like an ad for a pub or restaurant or something.
and if i'm a betting man you waited for the people to enter the scene, yes?
good photo of the everyday life in Warsaw.

Are you trying to pull one over on us, is this actually a pre-fabricated street scene from a movie set? :) This reminds me of The Truman Show, where the supporting actors were all on their respective marks to "appear" like life in natural motion.
A wonderful capture, and one which leaves the imagination and interpretation wide open. Great spacing between each person/set of these priests in passing, with the lone woman walking in the opposite direction...and with a smile for good measure. :) Brilliant capture...and as they say in Hollywood, "That's a wrap!" Have a great day ahead. All the best.

A striking shot, some things in life really are a matter of black and white, light and shadow and here the stark figures leading into same direction render the total weight of this shot even without the woman and the contrast obviously is hard to miss. A well composed image with lovely element of movement timely shot, credit to your keen observation of an amazing scene and powerful capture. Congrats

these priests look more like some busy buisnessmen hurrying to their offices mostly because of their black bags. I like the single nun going in totally opposite direction which makes this picture more diversified. Well framed and with nicely given natural colors and proper sharpness.
Thanks for sharing

This is a very interesting photograph, so engaging, something that I would hardly see in England.
You have created a great depth and sense of perspective.
I found it interesting that all the men were going in one direction, whilst the lady was going in the opposite one!
Have a great day,

A wonderfully taken image with great sense of journalism. Maybe it's a kind of that only you can 'see' it, it's truly remarkable. What I like it most is the atmosphere, through your sharp journalist's eyes, I sense the weight of the religion in their daily life... .
eldancer1 (36343) 2014-07-04 10:02
Interesting scene except for the priests and the nun no other people present. I'm from the old Catholic tradition, I attend a church in Las Vegas where the mass is in Latin. Good capture with nice details. Well done, tfs.
SnapRJW (31629) 2014-07-04 10:40
This shot amuses me Gert. I wonder what has put the smile on the nun's lips? I love the way you managed to get the priests strung across the full width of the frame. An interesting and well timed shot.
Apurba20 (984) 2014-07-04 23:00
A very elegant scene of the morning (even clerics and priests work) and that is calm and soothing. Nice observation about the gender thing. :)
Have a great weekend.

What a scene! I live in Warsaw but I've never seen so many priests and nuns in one place outside the church:) Really brilliant observation! Well done!
mirosu (16273) 2014-07-06 3:43
Excellent perspective, superb photo taken from very good viewpoint. The arrangement with black dressed priests and none with a bright building background is superb. The inclusion of green tree and the small board is very good.
Very well done.
p.s. Sorry for delayed comments, but I do not have internet access every day.
photographer_sg (4414) 2014-07-06 4:47
Lovely composition with the priests and the nun dressed in black spread out evenly across the frame. The cobbled road and the building with its rows of windows make a very attractive perspective with lovely details provided by the tree and the restaurant sign.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice Sunday.

Vous êtes arriver au bon moment de la présence de tout ces prêtres et la bonne sur allant dans le sens opposé, bonne prise en diagonale, belle présentation
kasianowak (9407) 2014-07-06 10:40
Interesting observation from the streets of Warsaw. Makes me wonder where they are all going, I don't think I have every seen so many priests at one time.
The image is almost timeless, if not for the (restaurant?) sign, it could have been taken e.g. in the 70s. You have made me realise that priests' attire has not changed for decades.
Good question about the woman - signum temporis?? ;-)
Have a nice evening

Hi Gert, An unique scene which has so many priests going to work and a nun walking to the opposite direction at the same time. I may guess the Monastery is not far from the church. Your angle has given you a good balance of space between each priests. They add as silhouettes in the day hour and they also drop a nice black colour on the high walls of the church. Best regards
mjw364 (1400) 2014-07-10 13:04
I hardly think priests are one's to judge women these days given the scandals that currently beset the catholic church - so perhaps these guys are like rats leaving the sinking ship... no wonder the Nun is smiling to herself!

Good street scene, well photographed, interesting observation. Nice work, nice captured moment.
