Photographer's Note

The mountain Giewont rises over the town of Zakopane on the edge of the Tatry Mountains in southern Poland. Know locally as 'The Sleeping Giant', the legend says that the giant will awake some day when he is needed to save the country.

Giewont is a very popular walk from Kuznice on the outskirts of Zakopane. We combined it with a walk along the Poland - Slovakia border ridge, starting from the cable-car up to Kasprowy Wierch. It's a good day's walk, spectacular views but not too hard. The final ascent to the summit is a bit tricky but there is a sort of via ferrata arrangement of chains to hold onto. You meet all sorts of people on the way, from babes in arms to nuns in full habit!
