Photographer’s Note

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and of St. Joseph the Betrothed (or church of Carmelites) in the city of Warsaw (Warszawa), Krakowskie Przedmiescie street. Built for the Discalced Carmelite monks in 1661-1681. Designed by J. Belloti and funded by King Władysław IV. The Neo-Classic façade to Efraim Schroeger's design. On the left: Adam Mickiewicz Monument. Designed by Cyprian Godebski. The monument to the greatest Polish poet. Unveiled in 1898, 100 years after his birth, in the epoch of intense Russification of Poland after the January Uprising. Its inauguration was a success of the Construction Committee headed by Michał Radziwiłł and Henryk Sienkiewicz (future Nobel Prize in literature). In 1942, the Nazis destroyed it and transferred to Hamburg. Unveiled in 1950.
