Happy New Year everyone, and I've just got back again. This time from driving trains in Poland (see more in the travelogue). This is the regular Wolsztyn to Leszno morning commuter service, and yesterday morning was the only chance I got to take a shot of it, since the for the rest of the week I've been driving it!
So here's the first of a series of Polish trains (hope it doesn't get boring). I thought of making this B&W, but I like the reflected lights on the parked coaches, and there's other opportunities.

J’adore le rendu des couleurs ici !
La zone de fumée est proche du noir et blanc, tandis que les phares du train déchirent la rétine !!!
Merci pour le partage
mugush (2098) 2006-01-08 8:21
Fantastic.. thanks God you havnt change it into black and white mode..
reflection and smoke is the key of this photo..
very nice work..
thanks for sharing
dodic (708) 2006-01-08 8:21
Impressive shot on this engine, and impressive cloud of smoke, like in some old movie.
Happy new year to you too.
keribar (43841) 2006-01-08 8:21
Reminds me the days of WWII in Poland and that is not a good memory. Nevertheless I find the picture extremely strong with the locomotive, the thick cloud of smoke and the reflections of the light on the wagon.
Excellent shot Richard - Izzet
isabela_sor (47748) 2006-01-08 8:22
Still working this steam train?!Splendid....This is a very sharp and well composed image. Good management of the light as well.
Lisas_world (1232) 2006-01-08 8:26
Beautiful shot, Richard.. great smoke! I like the little slice of background shrouded in pollution, and I'm glad you chose to keep the color for the sake of the headlight reflections which are the finishing touch. It looks like it'd be fun to drive!
jasmis (57906) 2006-01-08 8:35
Wow, I even didn't know that steam locomotives are in use now! Excelent photo. Give us more.

Hi Richard, welcome bach & happy new year !
That's a lovely view for the train enthusiast I am, a vivid and lively scene shot with modern body and glass but showing us a timeless scene, amazing you managed to find a view like this in the 21st century !!!
Have a nice sunday,
pommedujardin (385) 2006-01-08 8:51
Photo vraiment impressionnante !
dommage que l'on apparecoit une parabole à l'arrière plan, sinon, on plonge littéralement dans l'époque
merci pour tes voeux, bonne Année 2006 pour toi aussi
FORJP001 (3819) 2006-01-08 8:56
This one is a great shot and reminds me the old time before the steam was replaced by diesel fuel.
A lot of pollution too so I placed this one under the theme pollution. The red reflects on the wagons reminds us the brazier inside the locomotive thus generating power and pollution.
I am in a hurry to read and see others trains pictures in your travelogue.
P.S. The last time I saw such a powerful locomotive was in Québec city back in 1968.
Cliffy (590) 2006-01-08 8:57
Everything about this shot is,from a steam buffs pont of view absoluteley perfect, there is plenty of steam the lights and their reflection help pierce the gloom and the slight grain adds to the grubby steam feel.I am so looking forward to the rest of your posts if they are this good.
mark88 (2) 2006-01-08 9:14
Excellent photo, beautiful steam locomotive.
tim-of-the-hill (17) 2006-01-08 9:34
Really nice photo - you've managed to bring out the detail on the locomotive whilst keeping the rest of the scene properly exposed (I've always had problems with this in the past).
The only minor criticism could be the part of a sign poking out behind the end of the train. Not very easy to do anything about that one!
Overall composition is really good and the carriages in the siding balance the moving train on the right. It feels really alive.
devimeuxbe (58557) 2006-01-08 9:58
Very strange atmosphere of the last century. What about the pollution !
NIce grale and excellent sharp for this dark smoke.
MichaelTrezzi (3368) 2006-01-08 9:59
Hi Richard, Great sentimental pic. Like the warm reflection of the headlights on the parked car. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Michael
bantonbuju (51789) 2006-01-08 10:03
where the hell is wolsztyn?
seems like you had an interesting trip :-))
i like this packed-with-steam-and-smoke image, good zoom-in of those powerful weehicles;
curious about the subsequent installments, too;
have a nice evening,
cyrrhus (2878) 2006-01-08 11:00
This is a fantastic picture and a very nice testimony of an industrial era that will soon dissapear. The atmopshere is magic... the steam column, the reflecting lights on the wagon... and everything almost bitonal in the morning mist.
Excellent work !
don_narayan (2014) 2006-01-08 11:52
Hi Richard. This is going to be a good series... judging by the the theme and this great first photo. really good image, the steam engine... which I never saw one in Poland... but this is a neat one, it looks like the engine and passenger car are one... they must be very provincial towns. well, great job, looking forward to more.
designsoul (21492) 2006-01-08 12:09
A powerful shot, Richard, almost out of the late 19th century. Magnificient light-dark contrasts, wonderful tonality throughout.
Jeppe (18654) 2006-01-08 13:55
And a very Happy new year to you as well - I like this great moment you captured - and yes this surely a contribution to the pollution of Europe. I like the golden reflections of the light.
I wish you a pleasant journey - looking forward to more shots in 2006.
nwoehnl (122) 2006-01-08 14:22
Magnificent photo, Richard. The scene of the impressive old workhorse going below the bridge is beautifully shown, with a great texture to the emerging cloud of steam. Keeping it in color like you did is indeed a must; those golden light reflections on the cars at the left are quite a special touch.
capthaddock (28790) 2006-01-08 14:56
Hi Richard - I'm glad you kept the colour, this is one masterpiece, anchored by the reflected lights and the column of grey steam, which give it the perfect industrial atmosphere.
blue-velvet30 (6524) 2006-01-08 15:16
Great shot and colors. Well done!
weswang (18223) 2006-01-08 16:32
Hi Riachard, Happy 2006.
What a shot to the engine. An impressive catch of the smoke and steam coming out from the train. I like the photo with the color as it is to show the colors of the head lights and the reflections. A very well taken picture.
hispic (9652) 2006-01-08 21:39
The reflected lights on the parked coaches are very beautiful!
This scene reminds me the old time of the steam trains.
Is a large amount of smoke presents to the photographer?
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2006-01-09 2:59
Hello Richard, happy new year to you too, I hope we can enjoy your pictures again from all over the world!
What a nice 'steam beast', I understand that you have been enjoying yourself?? ;-) Must have been an adventurous trip in winter.
Great view with the yellow reflection on the carriage.
dada (1135) 2006-01-09 3:15
Happy New Year for you and your familly, Richard!!!
great picture, amaizing atmosphere, excellent lights... first I thouhgt too why you didn't make a BW, but I saw the reflection of the lights which are priceless...
jjcordier (79289) 2006-01-09 3:26
Impressive shot on this engine, and impressive cloud of smoke. I like the golden reflections of the light.
KevRyan (22956) 2006-01-09 4:18
Beautiful shot Richard - full of the drama, noise and smoke of steam - the reflection on the carriage reaslly lifts the image again - what a grand idea - you must have experienced a nice roasting feeling in that cold weather......isn't it amazing how happily we used to visibly pollute our environment with this smoke when there were thousands of such engines.
best wishes kev
ChrisJ (107157) 2006-01-09 4:25
Almost a b&w, but with the added warm golden reflection on the side of the railway carriage. A nostalgic shot, with superb sharpness. Outstanding work!
krakowiak (4762) 2006-01-09 4:54
I haven't seen such a great steam engine in Poland since almost 15 years and I didn't know that they are still in everyday use. This steel machine looks amazing on Your photo. You've made great composition with coaches on the left side of the picture and lights reflects on them.
richtersl (3546) 2006-01-09 8:04
At first glance I thought this would be wonderful in sepia and then I saw your note about the reflected lights. You're right about keeping this in color because otherwise you'd lose the wonderful golden tones of the reflection. That plume of smoke is fantastic.
sergecross (3438) 2006-01-09 9:45
Richard, nice theme worked. I like the train in action and also the other one but the special objective on this photo is, to recognize the pollution. I like it.
carper (96) 2006-01-09 10:07
wauw Richard, a fantastic shot,
what a fantastic steam atmosphere, It remember me that we have this year in our town Dordrecht in steam 2006. one of the biggest steam festivals in Europe. Thank you for the good photo and the well taken shot.
eleparc (24063) 2006-01-09 12:40
i missed that one too and i love it just as well! it has this special atmosphere that makes me think of the great rail era in Western europe, and the late XIXth century.. I love the fact that you posted this one in color!
Fixfocus (9385) 2006-01-09 12:42
Excellent capture of the steam machine in action.A well balanced composition, the reflection on the parked coaches and of course the smoke are great details.
Happy new year,
wilkinsonsg (8662) 2006-01-09 15:27
A very well captured column of smoke! - the rest of the picture is great too - TFS :)
jrj (34843) 2006-01-10 5:06
I looked to the 2 versiona (bw and this one) and I think this one is the one I prefer. Excellent setting in the tight compo. Amazing too see the steamer engine still in full swing. Great light and reflection to the cars at left. Very good work here Richard!
Jaku (6812) 2006-01-10 5:59
I like this photo.
Expecially smoke - looks like 3D.
LEA (4984) 2006-01-10 14:59
Happy new year for you too!
This is not boring at all . It's interesting!
I did'nt know that steam trains were still in use in europe !
Great shot !
bebel (7588) 2006-01-11 5:36
very Nice Richard, the use of zoom is great and give a nice frame. You capture also a excellent moment when the power is biggest.
thanks for this
I like the others shot of steam railway
clodreno (0) 2006-01-11 7:29
a lovely image Richard, great to see those oldies..
Happy new year to you from Cochin in kerala, leaving to morrow for Sabarimala, a big pilgrimage.
rhizomes (15343) 2006-01-13 11:51
Wow ! Great picture with all this vapours and the good sensation of distance given by the 70-300...
orme (7215) 2006-01-14 22:32
Hello Richard. You must have had a great time driving those trains. You captured the smoke and steam perfectly. The light reflected on the stationary cars is quite beautiful. Well done.
yannick (1471) 2006-01-15 9:18
You made a really interesting trip, learning to drive a steam loco. And it gives us the possibility to enjoy your nice photos.
This one is particularly good because of the reflection of the light on the wagon, and the idea of power given by the smoke.
ahmetgedikli (25593) 2006-01-15 10:29
Impressive and dramatic view, nice color and sharp. Thanks for sharing.
Have anice day,
rbcy1974 (20758) 2006-01-16 8:53
THis photo is full of action! It seems like a scene caught in DIckensian England. Love the golden light reflected in the locomotive,
really great work
banyanman (7789) 2006-01-20 11:08
A very impressive photograph, Richard, and the detail in the smoke makes it almost 3D. Good decision to keep this in colour as the reflection of the lights on the carriages on the left is a highlight. Perfect exposure, DOF and saturation. Cheers . . . David
Isabelle (9046) 2006-01-22 8:07
impressive steam, impressive colors, Richard.
i ask myself whether this steam is a source of polution. if so, polish people are in trouble!
i know you´re not much into cropping but i would love to crop your shot right in the guard rail line up there.
elihesamian (26149) 2006-01-23 12:52
Hello dear Richard,
I'm very glad you posted it in color version,You are right and I think the reflection on the parked coaches is a great element here,
What a scene,woww!
What a moment you was there, great POV,very well captured and composed and it has a special dynamism, too,
ahaa,70-300,happy new lens, this must be great, withg IS,too, must be better than mine, are you satisfyed?!
The shot is great,no doubt,fine one,Rishard,
Thanks for your very warm words on my recent shots,
timleahy (2195) 2006-01-23 17:42
Excellent shot Richard, very well composed, and good exposure levels. A little noisy but that's acceptable as I think lighting conditions were dull?
You got the drive the train???
efimoore (2126) 2006-01-24 2:06
Impressive train shot. The smoke and the light add much interest.
AmiBe (6042) 2006-01-26 10:31
I've just discovered this impressive shot.
The smoke is so powerful.
I like the lights in this grey environment.
coco (30439) 2006-01-27 17:08
Hi again, Richard.
The composition, the light and the smoke make of this one a very nice and also attractive photo.
Simply very good.
Thanks for share.
xuaxo (6846) 2006-02-04 22:42
That's good that you left it in colour, to see the golden reflected lights.
mikee (2354) 2006-02-11 0:45
Quite an impressive composition, Richard. I noticed this one a while ago. Since I'm crazy about trains, especially old steam ones, this just hits the right note for me. Indeed, it would work nice to see it b&w, but there's something special in the colors: the greys and the reflected lights. And what a contrast! I really like the setting and the atmosphere - to me it feels so Central-Eastern European, maybe even a setting from mystery or spy novels/movies :D
Very well done.
postvikram (1199) 2006-02-16 4:47
Very impressive capture.I just started to browse your gallery and the first thing that caught my eye was this one.Excellently done.Though theres some noise in the pic, the subjects are admirable. Its very rare to see steam engines back here in India now.The dense smoke is a beautiful sight. Thanks for sharing - Vikram
lu_muratori (618) 2006-02-21 15:42
Hello Richard, I am so glad you gave me a review on my photo 'cause it brought me to your photos, although sooner or later I would have found you. Amazing travelogue. I am loving every photo but this is very special with this wicked steam and those reflected lights . WOW , they are amazing! I am really glad that you have choosen not to do it in B&W. Great job!
jammer79 (2722) 2006-02-25 21:49
perfect shooting. Like the smoke and light reflection on the other train. Well done.
bombilla (3406) 2006-02-26 15:41
Fire and brimstone. The Eastern European railyards seem to belong to another time and you have caught that here. The headlights of the locomotive reflected on the three passenger cars really makes the photo, imho.
lestans (17152) 2006-02-27 5:22
What a scene!! dramatic, so dramatic! Fantastic colors, I like light reflexed on the left train. And I like the horizontal line of the bridge. Great!
Luan (12971) 2006-03-01 5:59
Fanstatic one, I have freshly discover this picture. What more to say.........sit and enjoy.
ndb1958 (9289) 2006-03-03 9:51
what a great shot! Amazing colours and lightning. The reflections on the left train are great. I like the atmosphere.
D-fens (142) 2006-03-05 18:18
I like this! Didn't know they are still in use :)
atus (15856) 2006-03-06 13:40
Well, dear Richard,I´ve just opened Your intro page and a train is going to run over me.I had only time to redirect it to my favorites!
It´s a really great capture,it seems to come out steaming from my monitor. You made a very good choice giving up with the idea to make it b/w ´cause the reflected light is simply stunning and more realistic. Really compliments for this and for all Your amazing photo gallery!
adrost (2378) 2006-03-13 14:22
Amazing photo. Why i didn see before ?
lolorenzo (114) 2006-03-15 9:10

Outstanding shot !
Wonderful composition with this squared ratio.

Hi khun Richard,
I agreed with 70 persons comments above :)
Didi (59694) 2006-04-09 11:11
Very nice POV of this old machine.
Framing is very well done.
I have the same Polski similar machine who is exposed in St Fargeau castel park.
BrianGraney (1738) 2006-04-17 13:32
I really don't know how I missed this one: it's incredible. I can only echo the previous comments!
The golden orange reflections work so well aaginst the grey smoke.
kajspice (4542) 2006-04-17 17:28
ooohh...this one! Why on earth I thought this was in England (and in b/w), I have no idea...I have very ignorantly ignored this because I am not particularly interested in trains! However, upon closer inspection, this is remeniscent of a different age...for this reason, I like it. The smoke, of course, is quite special. This is more than a picture of a train...
ps. I owe you some candy floss!
emanetkerem (193) 2006-04-19 6:13
Good shoot.Train on the light reflection very nice.
Well done. TFS
Sting (69) 2006-05-01 8:04
Great photo. The reflection seems like fire with smoke from the train.Great!!!
Yffic (6106) 2006-05-15 15:44
C'est une photo absolument grandiose...
Je te tires un grand coup de chapeau.
Bravo Master !!!
patriik (1935) 2006-05-18 15:28
This is fantastic scene! I`ve never seen such interesting moment with trains as the mein objects. Wonderful framing! Very good POV and DOF! Thanks for sharing!
cbrman (21665) 2006-06-01 5:50
Il y déjà de multiple crtitiques pour cette photo mais je m'y joins.
L'impression de puissance dégagée par la locomotive est superbe. La reflection des phares dans le wagon donne une touche de couleur !
s10001in (0) 2006-06-15 3:56
very well done.
Wonderful smoke clouds.
Great shot of rail yard.
mdetay (4865) 2006-06-16 4:12
Excellent shot. Fantastic.
Hanssie (10465) 2006-06-17 14:44
Minimal colours with a few yellow spots,an excellent dramatic shot and I'm not the only one who's commenting here:-))
The smoke is spectacular too !
Great shot, Richard !
cloverstar (0) 2006-06-18 15:45
What a marvelleous experience this must have been to drive steam trains. A very unique gift for yourself, and probably a well deserved one. The steam coming out of the train is very impressive. Pity there is a lot of noise in the image though. Perhaps it was a low light condition. Very good composition. Thanks for dropping by my recent photo today. Much appreciated as I'm not here too often.
balatrek (7455) 2006-06-21 18:19
Excelente fotografía y perfecta composición, gran efecto del humo sobre los trenes, recuerda a las peliculas antiguas de la guerra, en blanco y negro tambien quedaria muy bien, felicidades por tu trabajo.
peco85 (921) 2006-06-29 7:33
I feel sorry for the Polaks as they seem to get very polluted..
Wonderful composition and a great mystique atmosphere oyu caught! Good light and interesting deatils. A bit grainy smoke but the image is just amazing..
pchappuis (43) 2006-07-05 15:40
Excellentes conditions pour faire de la photo de train à vapeur, à savoir:
temps grisâtre, température assez fraîche et un bon coup du mécanicien pour cracher la fumée, j'adore!
bend1k (934) 2006-07-12 20:24
hi richard, excellent composition and i like the way you captured the smoke. it's good you took it in color, the orange reflection on the coaches worked great
GLEM (3004) 2006-07-19 6:48
magnifique cliché, c'est une image d'apochalypse. Le train semble avoir son dernier souffle de vie, la couleur et la fummée témoigne de sa douleur.
cepekdong (3676) 2006-09-26 3:45
very nice picture of this steam locomotive ! the smoke and the dark cloudy weather makes it really dull and cold; it gives it an atmosphere of the industrial revolution: no care for pollution, progress and business are the most important things ! the light gives the picture an interesting atmosphere !
sebcz (2345) 2006-10-04 3:39
Great shot! I noticed the clouds are a bit noisy, so I applied NI in WS, hope you don't mind.
Pierrot-III (347) 2006-11-08 18:04
Very impressive shot.
I find the athmosphere of the great impressionist painter.
This picture seems to be of "another age".
I put it in my favorites.
repaulson (607) 2006-12-04 19:46
Richard, So crisp and the place ment of the train after the bridge. I'm srue you have some cool pictures of this train under the train billowing the smoke under the bridge. But I'm glad you posted this one. Looks great.
asajernigan (21427) 2006-12-30 21:48
This is a great train photo. The light reflecting off the parked cars is a great effect, I'm glad you left it in color. It must have been a wonderful opportunity to be able to drive such a grand machine, what a dream!
The lighting and color is super here.
mickyg (815) 2007-03-05 5:58
Superb shot Richard, I see you have the same passion as myself for steam trains looking through your gallery .. some excellent shots there ..
koker (267) 2007-06-14 12:24
Great shot. And effect of smoke fill the air. Well done.
This shot brought me back to my childhood. I always played in the area of the Burdur Train Station (southern Turkey). I like that machines; massive, powerfull and roarded like a lion.
Nikofan (1090) 2007-07-30 10:51
This one is another great work!
Very special "rail" mood.
anilyn (87) 2007-07-31 7:48
Very impressive! I like the comparison between the strong locomotive with light, smoke (and sound ;) and the quiet coach on the left ;)

what a wonderful scene, Richard, you got here.
A moody composition and stunning light reflection
I really enjoy it
MarcT (20964) 2008-02-20 2:11
I had to stop by this one. The steam and the power given to your picture by it are just making those two trains really beautiful.
danyy (0) 2008-03-09 14:29
on se pose des questiosns sur l'avenir de l'atmosphère, ces photos approetent une réponse plutôt négative, mais heureusement que les trains électriques prennent le relais.
Superbe photo qui montre à quel point les rejets de fumées sont énormes.

Impressive view from my country...
I LOVE THE POLISH STEAMING !!! :)
Pure beauty for my eyes, pure poison for the environement...
In any case, incredible realisation of this scene.
Best regards. Grazyna.
g_panakia (4031) 2008-10-08 2:52
what a beautiful shot!!!
the steam is very well captured while the reflection of train's lights to the next wagon gives a colour stroke of the brush to the grey atmosphere...

Love it !
That's my kind of travel :^D
CLODO (33032) 2010-04-19 2:47
old train in action: great smoke emission (we can't move now!!!) and magnificent headlights and their reflections

My first thought went to those cattle cars of WWII carrying people towards the "final solution"! Impressive view of a starting engine, indeed.
No birds flying around!

This one is interesting too, very evocative. I like the lights and the glow cast on the adjacent carriage. You made the right choice keeping this in colour.

Lots of atmosphere and vitality.Artistically steam engines are more attractive to the photographer as long as one does't take a deep breath. This is a first class representation with great colors and detailes.Regards Wolf.

Perfect mix of exiting elements - dim light, smoke and small but eye-catching areas of warm light, this photo truly deserves to be featured on the home page (where I found it). Brilliant work.

As said by many, the light reflecting off the stationary coach and smoke are the main attraction. A well composed photograph, excellent work.
