This is the Stary Rynek, The Old town market square, of Poznań in western Poland. Many Polish cities can boast of very attractive central squares lined with nice buildings, but among those I saw during my recent journey the one in Poznań was probably my favourite.
This square was first laid out in 1253 but has of course seen a lot of major change since then. Towards the end of WW2 there was a lot of fighting and destruction in Poznań, and I am not sure how much of what is seen today at the central square that is "genuine" or actually rebuilt after the war. Regardless, it is a remarkably colourful and pleasant place. Certainly this square attracts a lot of tourists, but at least during my visit it didn't quite reach the levels of mass tourism that I find disturbing. Be warned, though, that a cup of coffee at the square will cost you twice as much as one or two blocks away.
The figure in the brown dress just to the right of the centre is one of the many street performers seen everywhere these days. I think the grey person standing on the pillar to the right is actually a statue.
This is the same square where people gather every day at noon to watch the fighting goats.
Here is a larger version. I have added two more photos from this nice square as workshops.

Hello dear Gert,
Never been there but having seen those wonderfull fassades, most probably Poznan will be one of my next targets.
You have captured almost all important details and events of a place in one frame ; Street performers, visitors of all ages etc etc.
TFS and best regards

Hi Gert, What I dislike most in popular places , more then herds of tourists and parking cars, are beer umbrellas. I was once on the TE -meeting in Poznań and the square was totally occupied by them, impossible to make any photos. You were lucky here. Very attractive view of this square. Indeed it looks nice although I prefer Rynek in Wrocław. People are enjoying holidays atmosphere, moving slowly around. Very nicely composed picture, good colours.
Are you sure it is not street performer on this pole ?):
And why you do not like to wear Lederhosen :)

Fine street shot with lovely framing and perspective. The row of buildings with their attractive colours and designs makes a wonderful backdrop and the people - the two kids :) - on the street make it look so lively. The statue with people gathered around and the performer in the foreground, blend nicely with the scene.
Great workshop post too. I bet you were pleased to have the people after all :).
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.

your keen eye for a picture has served you well again, this series of shots contains so many interesting buildings and occupants, especially the well behaved school children..
Fine street photography.

En intressant gatubild med vackra hus. Man undrar hur många år dessa hus har haft den här "turistvänliga" utformningen. Många turister här och sålunda många gatuartister. Det ser rätt varmt ut här.

I know very well this place.
Good frame and colors.
asajernigan (20364) 2014-07-15 12:04
You chose a great POV for this shot allowing us to see the facades from an angle that creates a nice diagonal. The people add a nice sense of scale for the scene. The lighting is fine and the photo has good sharpness and detail.

All three of your pictures of this interesting place is excellent, and bring back to me the memory when Poznan was very much in the news in Hungary. We watched the news in June 1956 about protests of the people in Posnan against the Stalinist regime. It was an inspiration for similar protests in Hungary in October, which resulted in a full scale revolution.

the Old Market Square of Poznan really looks colourful, popular and interesting. You composed a great presentation of the characteristic architectural setting, it looks so compact from this perspective, its colours and details are very attractive. After admiring this lovely and reassuring background, it's very intriguing to observe the people and the many scenes and stories they have to offer. The workshop pictures are wonderful complements, the one with the children is delightfully busy while the girl looks lovely but bored. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

you can't go everywhere...Poznan was a city in Poland we had our eye on but time and wanting to see other cities took over...maybe some other time.
I'm a little bit surprised that you enjoyed it so much here, only because its a touristy area with lots of people..but like you said, its not AS busy as some other spots.
and of course there HAS to be a person in the square trying to attract attention for money...seems like its the new thing i guess. Its that way every country I go to.
glad to see Poznan in your gallery like this, gives me an idea. very colorful, somewhat similar to many other Polish squares.
have a great day

Hello Gert ,
Superb architecture with so attractive elements : painted facades , arches , paved square ... Many people , but not too crowdy , as you say . I can understand your enthousiasm for this city .
Royaldevon (26481) 2014-07-15 13:58
Ha! Ha! Gert, great minds think alike, it had occurred to me that it might be wise to ensure that the grey person actually was a statue!
This is such an attractive place! The houses look as if they have been picked straight out of a children's book for their colours and decorations! Can you imagine the instructions they will have to deliver to the decorators when the frontages need refreshing!
Thank you for sharing this. I have really enjoyed perusing the photograph.

Quelle belle rangée de maisons. Une belle place trčs animée, haute en couleurs et en formes sous un belle lumičre d'été. La diagonale donne de la profondeur ā l'ensemble.
eldancer1 (25135) 2014-07-16 6:59
It must be, there sure are a lot of people including the street performer. Due to freedom of speech the Fremont Experience in downtown Las Vegas is full of street performers. I like your capture of this square with good lighting and nice details. Well done, tfs.
dkmurphys (46140) 2014-07-16 7:52
Fine capture of those attractive facades. I like the atmosphere of the square also. Well done!
ktanska (24102) 2014-07-16 12:17
Painting of those houses is certainly extraordinary. And I don't think I've seen such before. Funny how those narrow buildings have unified style, including arches.
Beautiful old town square with plenty of life.
tyro (18574) 2014-07-16 12:39
A fascinating note and a lovely trio of photographs to accompany it!
This looks and sounds like a wonderful square in this old town but clearly commercialism is present here too judging by the street performers and the young "mediaeval" lady walking around with painted nails and a wrist watch. But I do suspect that the person standing atop the tall pillar is actually a statue, as is the one playing a lyre in your other workshop picture!
All three pictures are delightful but your main one is my favourite, probably because the sun is shining and that adds "punch" to the varied colours and textures of the buildings on the right and also lights up the people amassed in the square.
bukitgolfb301 (34474) 2014-07-16 22:42
Hi dear Gert, how are you?
Very fine framework and composition via appropriate long focus lense usage. Compressing effcet is very comfortable and freshing. Sharp and clear image as usual.
All the best and have a good day! Takero from Tokyo

I love this image for its wonderful array of colours, full of character as the beautiful architectural style of the buildings really strike the eyes. The angular layout along with human interactions and busyness are nicely blended together, indeed a bustling street scene well taken, Congrats, TFS.
John_F_Kennedy (42026) 2014-07-17 6:04
Wonderful shot. I love the vivid colours of the building. Beautiful light, well done.
kasianowak (4882) 2014-07-18 2:33
Lovely sunny photo of Poznan Rynek, perfect time of the day to present these colourful narrow houses, indeed, probably most beautiful rynek buildings in Poland. Thanks for the explanations which of the "statues" is real - these days you never know! ;)
My favourite is Wroclaw Rynek, but that's because I have spent a lot of time wandering there (I think it's a bit spoilt by the, otherwise quite nice, modern fountain).
I like the swarms of colourful kids in the WS shot and as for the girl, maybe she is Andersen's Little Match Girl? I saw one in Krakow a few years ago.
Have a nice weekend
jcpix (11440) 2014-07-18 12:31
It's easy to see right away why this would be a popular spot, the Old Town square is teaming with colors and life...and on this day, sunshine too. :) I enjoy the touristy hot spots for the sake of cliche, but I much prefer the side streets and alleys that are off the beaten path. This is a delightful line up of facades, each one with a distinct space, design and color...and the people add a lively atmosphere. All three pictures depict the daily life here, my favorite actually being the school group....but this main post is certainly well deserving of the "top spot" just the same. :) Have a pleasant weekend. Take good care.
Kielia (22913) 2014-07-19 7:06
wonderful shot. Interesting cities feature a lot in your work but this has to be one of the most fascinating. The facades are really very beautiful. My compliments!

Hi Gert, Very interesting market square in the Old Town. The colourful facades of these houses are lovely. Nice POV shows most of the square and the activities being held at that moment. Tiny stalls by the arch entrances are well organized and neat. The man in the front with a stick and dressed like a Satan from Hell.....horrible guy. Best regards
Silvio1953 (115837) 2014-07-20 5:53
Ciao Gert, great view of beaitioful square with fantastic facades, lovely composition with a lot of people, splendid light, excellent clarity amd wonderful colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

nikkitta (13220) 2014-07-22 15:52
I have recently see another view of this place posted on TE, remember because the narrow colored houses with patterned facades, here I prefer the blue and brown
Like the way you manage to obtain the capture, lots of people but no one so very near
About the grey one I believe is just a boring grey statue
Good work, regards
The WS with the so well dressed girl deserved a post, I saw people dressed to give character at the place at the thermal of Bath
jjcordier (73218) 2014-07-25 22:20
Les faįades de cette place sont trčs originales. le cadrage que tu en as fait est bien vu et la lumičre du moment parfaite.

I am always amazed at how Poland has changed in recent years following its difficult past. I was there for a week visiting some universities pre-1989 and life seemed rather bleak, the shops empty and the squares almost deserted (except for those wanting to exchange money).
The colourful houses make an attractive BG and life looks very pleasant for those wandering the square. A very clear picture with plenty of interest in the street life. Excellent note too.
Kind Regards, Ann
Angshu (54709) 2014-07-28 22:57
I am quite attracted buy the painted patterns on the house facades...The square looks lively and I read your note and the Wss with interest.
What I am curious about is the column with the statue above...the man standing in front of it is getting some attention...wonder why?
Good close crop for a well done picture!
Tigerlily (2915) 2014-08-01 9:14
It is a beautiful place... wonderful and colourful buildings.. and you captured the activities on the square vividly.. Photo taken, art performance, .. was he making a speech?
dcole (243) 2014-08-08 14:21
A lovely perspective of the market square. I really like the composition and leading lines of the colorful buildings. The robed figure adds some intrigued to the scene! Excellent photo, TFS
mcmtanyel (10429) 2014-08-21 21:34
The colorful buildings, especially the designs on them are very interesting. I hope the live statue got some tips, but it looks like people are more interested in the person on the pedestal of the real statue. Vey nice daily life scene from Poland.
PS. Right you were about heavy post-processing. Any suggestions about how to eliminate those halos?
