Photographer’s Note

4th of June 1989 - the first non-communist government in Poland has been established. 20 years after the biggest Polish newspaper - Gazeta Wyborcza organised street happening with many visual elements connected with former regime.
"PZPR (communist party) is a guarantor of your living needs and aspirations" - the banner says.
I asked this woman does she want to be photographed under such inscription. Why not, take the photo... - she answered...

Hello Jan,
Whatever else can be said, but red banners do look good on photos. Here is a nice combination of red and green, also a fine portrait. The woman is well placed in the lower corner and there is a fine diagonal line going through her and the banner.

Hi Jan,
Here is another of your excellent portraits, this one with very appropriate colours as well. There is red found in the banner and in her lipstick, there is green found in the bushes and in her scarve. A fine coulor harmony!

Good evening Jan!
An eyecatching and impressive photo - in each respect! And a meaningful one. All these goony slogans then - I've seen them also in "GDR". Goony, disgusting and dishonest!

Witaj, jakie to szczęście, ze ta powtórka z peerelu to tylko happening i rozrywka. Wolałabym, zeby ten transparent był rozwiniety. Minę ma jakąś nietęgą ta kobieta, nie wiem, czy jej nie żal tamtych lat. Z tej serii najbardziej mi sie jednak podobały rozmowy kontrolowane.

there are dissonances in this image that create the image... for example the red lipstick that you would not expect on an elderly woman's face. a symbol of something gone that cannot be revived - as the banner reminding what the Communist Party (said they) stood for..?
her expression is something between a smile and a grimace - it gives this image an interesting appeal.

Starsi ludzie nie postrzegają tamtego systemu jako formy skrajnego ucisku, pewnie dlatego kobieta nie miała oporów aby sfotografować się pod transparentem. Zresztą powiedzmy sobie szczerze w schyłkowej fazie to była już karykatura systemu.

Bardzo interesujący portret - nie wiedzieć czemu wydaje się jakby Pani ta tęskniła za tamtymi czasami. Hmmm no cóż chyba czasy młodości zawsze wspomina się najcieplej.
